it sounded to me that he hasn't been thrilled with the offenses strategy, practices, methods, etc. for some time based on what he said yesterday...

Anyone else get that impression?

Yep. He mentioned it wasn't one or two games but the whole body of work. It sounded like it predated the season start.

What did he expect? Not a lot of experience to begin with.

I was telling my wife "success" at North Texas is not an indication someone is ready for the type of talent we play every week

Has BV ever had an IQ test? I’m really beginning to wonder about his thought processes

SL has never coached QB's before either. A head scratcher hire for sure when you have a 5 star QB that needs a good QB Coach.

Well BV hired him to begin with so its kinda his fault. He better put a lot more thought into this next hire or it might be his last

SL will be ok, he is likely loaded already and he gets paid thru 2026 by OU. I think his contract is 2.6 million. I would take it.

And he played behind Brandon Daniels. Maybe that's where he got his coaching influence. Look lost, tuck the ball and run.

Daniels switched positions when stoops got there right? I know he was a pretty darn good kick returner.

That's right, but Seth was only a starter under John Blake when Brandon was QBing. I believe Stoops pushed Seth back on the depth chart upon arrival.

This begs the question, why TF didn't BV step in immediately? He cannot be hands off if he sees a systemic problem.

He had a 1.6 million dollar payday from UNT and is now getting 2.6 form OU, I think he is doing ok for himself.

The bad part of all of this is what kind of an OC can we get when its very likely BV will be on the Hot Seat next season? Another year like this could happen as it will take time to get an Offensive Line that can compete in the SEC. If an IC can work miracles in yr one he might be safe and BV as well but another bad Season BV should be let go so how good of an OC can you expect to come here knowing that, recruits as well as we all know opposing teams will use that to their advantage during recruiting.

No guarantee that either Hawkins or JA will like the hire or the way this Season has been handled and decide to Portal Out. Then what?
How many other Offensive Coaches will be gone at Seasons end and how will that affect those decisions? A new OC may want all his guys so we may see a complete overhaul on that side of the ball with Assistants fired which I am ok with all of them gone. How the hell it got this bad on the O is beyond belief. 29 sacks so far this yr and the Offense is ranked almost at the bottom in CF. Inexcusable for a program like OU.

May not see much of the game with Ole Miss. I can’t watch another wipeout.
if OU “mails it in” and suffers a blowout loss, Venables credibility may be beyond resurrection in my view.
OU can lose a close game with an improved offensive performance that would show me there’s something to hang my hat on.
But the offensive talent isn’t there and Finley has really nothing to work with.
Ole Miss will be intent on burying OU in front of its home crowd.

If it's any consolation, I keep reading articles here and there that there are OCs tripping over themselves to get this job. We're still Oklahoma, but how many more down years can we survive before becoming a Nebraska? We need to hit a homerun right now, and BV needs to prove this isn't ultimately a problem with his leadership. We have a limited opportunity here, or we could easily become a forgotten relic of college football like you fear.

JCon,
You nailed it.
And let’s face it, Nebraska IS a “forgotten relic”…..which I’m sad to say.
Can’t see OU going all out to fix this mess. Maybe Venables is the right guy and if so, he will learn from his mistakes. He’s still, so far, an excellent recruiter but I think he needs to upgrade his staff and prioritize recruiting offensive linemen.

There is a lot of blame here, but there are few teams in the country that could lose their top five receievers against every quality team on their schedule and have much of an offense. Throw in rookie quarterbacks and a bad OC and it's a candidate for disaster. Throw in having their weakest position losing three of their top six to start the season, and you end up 4-4 with four to play. A reminder that we've played the most brutal schedule in school history, and you have the likelihood of failing to make a bowl game a reality. If we get a couple of receivers back, then I think we have a chance to win two, of the left tackle issue is solved. 71 ain't the answer.

There are things about the way BV does things that I don't love. But he is a quality coach. From my perspective, the jury is still out on whether he's going to become a quality head coach or not. But the circumstances this year, are not any kind of place to hold judgment on him. You don't throw away good.
