Had some highlight-reel blocks and a nice tip slam. Suffice it to say, Vic shooting north of 40% from 3 would be one of the better reasonable things that could happen this season.

Vic looks to be on the way to a big year after his off-season surgery. He, Taylor and Pardon give us three solid scoring options. Team success hinges on bench play and finding an effective way to combat full court pressure.

Collins made the point this weekend that no one in the B1G will press the way FSU or La Salle do.

Not sure I would agree with this statement. I suspected that we would see a lot of pressing due to our ballhandler deficiency. I think we will see much more.

I don't think it's unreasonable to guess that some teams who generally don't press might be tempted to given our situation.
I guess we'll just wait and see.

Teams tend to do what they do. Very hard to change to a pressing trap defense if that isn't the scheme you practice. Why didn't Utah press NU after seeing how effective a bad La Salle team bothered the Cats? Because that isn't what they do.

I agree with you and that most teams will not make wholesale changes. I just don't think it's far-fetched to imagine a few teams pressing us for a portion of the game if we seem to be in a pretty good rhythm.

Player X: "Coach, I know we're not a pressing team and have not pressed anyone all year, but Xbob from the interwebs says it would be a FABULOUS idea against Northwetern due to something called their "ballhandler deficiency" ..."
Coach Y: "You do know that smoking weed can get you kicked off the team, correct?"
Player X: "But this Xbob guy insists the NU coach was off his rocker when he said no teams will press them like Fresno State and LaSalle did, and I hear that Xbob guy is always spot on in his assessments. He even bet a guy that their football team would not win five games this year! He is truly some kind of sports savamt who knows more than those idiot coaches...
Coach Y: Uh, they won eight games, and counting...can you pee into this plastic cup for me?

Hi Mike,

Any chance the non pressing IU team will press us tomorrow? Player X is asking for a friend.

If I'm in a tight game against NU....NU leads by 8-12....and it's late first half, early second half...I would just have to throw out an occasional full court press hanging one big man back. At this point the film tells you that Turner will eventually get himself trapped in a corner and make a really poor pass....and other than Law the chance of a turnover is better than when you press another Big Ten team.

You press on the inbounds and if NU doesn't immediately find itself in trouble, you drop another back so you have two to defend.

You would absolutely have to add this for a game against NU.

Of course you are correct, but that wasn't the point that was being discussed. People were posting that Collins was not being truthful when he stated thar BIG teams were not going to press like Fresno State amd LaSalle (two teams that press full -court the whole game regardless of opponent).

And, as an aside, when Ga. Tech pressed us first hslf, did they not drop out of ot after we burned them several times? Haven't rewatched so I could be in error, but I seemed to recall this being the case. And, of coirse, no way Ga. Tech presses full court the whole game, since that would keep thier stud Alvarado on the sidelines for a good portion of it. Suspect that this will be the case withany team with a staf player, as is the case with Indiana and Langford. Pressing teams like Fresno State have rotate their players frequently to keep the fresh.

Coliins: "NO one in the BIG will press us the way that Fresno State and LaSalle will press us."

Eager to hear your spin on how that translates into "No other team will press us, ever" #coachXBob

Reminds me of when my girlfriend, every girlfriend retorts ‘That’s different!’ Pretty sure unless the rosters of those teams transfer into the B1G, no team will press the same way. But that’s ok Mike, you took a leap, fell short and are now walking back your bold statement.

On the bright side, we now agree, or you agree with m6 early prediction, the most, if not every, team we face will press us. Regardless of whether that’s is their typical defensive scheme.

I see great progress in our relationship. Welcome to the dark side.

I was more commenting on the general topic and agree with your comments above.....I just feel like part of basketball is messing with your opponents head.....if NU has a bit of an Achilles heel, how do you not probe that.

No. Indiana does not press. Or play zone. They play a pack line man to man for 40 minutes. Archie's philosophy is to be really good at 1 defense and not average in a couple.

Lol, I didn't walk back anything. Still waiting for that archived post that you will pull up on me where I indicated no team in the BIG would press us .

How was that Indiana press today, btw? I guess they are not part pf the " most, if not every team will press us " club.

If you go back and actually read the posts, instead of trying to troll so hard, you might actually learn sonething...

It's going to get tiresome writing superlatives about Vic Law this year. NU is lucky to have him.

I'll tell you why I think Vic will get drafted or at least be on a roster next year. NBA scouts will pour over his tape and see that he takes a hits tough, tough shots, many of which he creates entirely on his own. And he hits them at a decent rate.

That with his defense and length make him a second round pick. I think the first round is a stretch because of all the Euro players and one and dones.

I agree he has definitely raised his game. It would be nice if one of the fresh emerged as the season progressed. Nance played some good ball yesterday. Kopp has looked really good in spots.

i have heard that Vic has been tremendous all off-season with doing extra work and listening to the coaches. Really a case of maturity and doing the work and its paying off for him.

Vic has a great high release on his three point shot and with his height at 6-7, it makes it very tough to defend. I think this experience as a point forward? this year will help him at the next level.

Came across this article with a ‘Vic Law NBA’ search today.

Law’s portion is about how Romeo Langford frustrated him with 1x1 defense, adding to the case for Langford as a top 15 pick.

It does however, refer to his nba prospects, ever so slightly: “Many consider Law a prospect in this upcoming draft ...”

https://cbbtoday.com/nba-draft/analyzing-the-enigmatic-romeo-langfords-nba-potential/

Everything NU has accomplished in the last five years is due in part to Vic’s decision to play for CCC and Northwestern. For this reason, he’s my favorite Cat.

Being a 3 and D guy and a wing who can guard multiple positions, should be an NBA prospect.

Law could help his stock by taking it to the basket more (and not relying so much on jump shots) and finishing better (Law's best move to the basket is the alley-oop).
