Noticed that Vrank (pretty sure that's who's at the far end of the bench here) is in a walking boot when I was looking at pictures from the 1st practice.

Anyone know what's up? I know he's likely to not get much burn this year, but just curious. We have a quite a history of big men with bad wheels.

He was definitely in a boot and did not practice at all, but I have no idea what is wrong.

Coach K indicated in his press conference yesterday that Vrankovic had a "stress reaction" earlier in the month of September and is now close to being able to practice for the first time this year.

Oh boy, a big man with foot problems. Not good at all. Think Oden and countless others. People just are not supposed to be that big and jump around on such little feet.

He's a monster. He'll battle similar foot issues that plagued Marshall early and Zoubs. He'll shirt this season.

was probably going to red shirt, this will make it easier. That's a tough body to work out at a D1 college level at 18 years old. You will see a lot of foot injuries in big guys at that age. Its just not the norm to be 7 feet tall at that age, takes years to fill into it.

If he red shirts it will be most beneficial to his conditioning. Those type foot injuries are all stress related due to over use bc those bigs are ready for that type of a physical demand. The other good thing is Vranks primary area of need to condioning and explosion. His hands, feet, post moves and finishing around the rim is already solid.

Can you redshirt 2 people a year, would be nice to redshirt him and Robinson. I think in 2-3 years they can be really good with the size they have now once they grow into that frame

Yes you can...Alex Murphy and Marshall Plummlee were recent at Duke.

I know how everyone worries about a big man having these injuries, but does he have a history of foot problems? Hopefully this won't be a chronic condition for him.

Big guys + Flat feet X constant foot strikes (college conditioning) = Foot problems

Oh, I understand 'Hokie that it's a real problem for big men, but not every big man has chronic foot problems. I just didn't know if this was his first one, or if he has had problems before. Obviously it's not a good thing, but hopefully it won't plague his career.

He hasn't suffered before, but the added weight of college strength training coupled with the cardiovascular portion which typically includes copious amounts of running will usually shred a big man's ligaments, primarily the plantar fascia. Until he can get the proper rehabilitation and acclimation, he'll have this issue. If he rushes back the way Zoubek did, he'll have back problems down the road. The way Zoubek did...
