The first UK/UL game in 1983 is one I'd rather not remember. Heartbreaking.

This is the 2nd game, of course. SPOILER ALERT: The Cats win this game 65-44. At the time, the win was the largest margin of victory for Kentucky against a top-ranked opponent in Rupp Arena history.

The late great Joe "String Music" Dean on the color with Skip Carey.

Wow great seeing that old Rupp floor, no 3 point line, the shorter game shorts.

I remember this game well. Freshman James Blackmon's back to back steals helped to blow this game wide open. Taped this game on my VCR, rewatched it many times. Blackmon's steals came at the 40:22 point in the video.

Dirk minniefield I still believe threw that game because of his disdain for Joe hall .

The wildcat logo at the very beginning is my personal favorite. It’s even better when it has the state outline behind it. I wish we’d use that and the power K as our primary logos.

The lack of contact back then is crazy compared to today. That foul on number 23 at the very beginning of the game is hilarious. He barely touched him with 2 hands and didn’t argue the call at all lol. Seems like we’ve gotten so far away from how the game of basketball was originally supposed to be played.

Was at Stokley for that one. Me and my brother had tickets. Saw the Cats beat Knight and Indiana on Thursday night.

Saw Governor John Y Brown land and get out of a helicopter on that Saturday.

Agree with everything but the bolded.

My generation (90s kids) fought hard to end the shorty shorts. lol

It was no secret back then jock sutherland could not stand Joe hall for refusing to play a more up tempo style that suited dirk minniefield that wide open layup uncontested was no fluke dirk and Sam bowie too wanted to run more Joe wanted to pound the ball inside with a half court offense jock sutherland left and went to the dark side around this time

Blackmon ended the game for all intents and purposes with his back to back pilfers and scores.
The Cards never recovered from that!

My sister took me to that game, we had seats above where the players came into Rupp, man the electricity was in the air so huge...

I don't think but one other game out of so many there, did I ever feel more electricity for... Except that final four game against Illinois at Rupp in 84. That game had it maybe even a little more than the UofL game, but wow!

Hairs standing up on your whole body electric.

Fun stuff ! Ahh memories!

UK also beat U of L in the Sweet 16 that season (1983-84). That game was also in Lexington and was much closer (72-67) than the first game.

Jock's UK hatred stems from the fact that he expected to parlay Dirk's scholarship into an asst. coach's spot for himself. Vengeful, petty piece of **** made Joe B's life miserable every chance he got after that didn't happen

I never would've dreamed that I could ever hate UL more than I did during this early 80's time-frame...then 20 years later, they hired Rick

Skip had a very dry sense of humor. Miss his broadcasts.

This is what I remember about why Jock didn't care for Hall. Also, I think Hall hired Derek Hord's high school coach as an assistant over Jock which might have sparked it.

We then beat Illinois to go to the Final 4.

That was the last time the NCAA allowed the home team to play in their home arena during the NCAA Tournament from that point forward.

That game was the very first UK game I ever saw in person. I grew up in VA hoping one day to get to see a game in Rupp Arena - and what a special experience for my first-ever game in Rupp.

Didn't Lancaster Gordon check into the game wearing the wrong jersey # - and received a technical foul in this one? [laughing] [laughing] 🌲

Remember watching this one live and LOVING life

My brother and I were there also. We were also at the 2 games in Rupp mentioned above. Still remember Crum interviewed before the game in 83 saying we (UK) tried to schedule game with them that season but he said we believed we would have Bowie back and his (Crum) name was Tucker not sucker. Always wished I had thought in time to make a sign for the 1st game in Rupp saying "Welcome Coach Tucker". Proved the lie that U6 always told about how they would play us at the Waddy/Peytona truck stop at 4am.
