What strikes me is that someone could reasonably suggest: "1,250 students will line up" (not noted...in frigid January weather in Evanston) to get free tickets to a game, in which the previous year's team went 2-16 in conference and that year's team was going to go 2-16 in conference. My, how times change. I assume I was one of those people hustling to get in line to make fun of Lou's "do" as it would seem we gave 8th ranked Illinois (Gill, Liberty, Bardo) a scare before falling.

Speaking of, did Illinois really play 11 scholarship players that season...and keep 9-11 walk-ons? That's crazy, right? https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/illinois/1990.html

Indiana's CURRENT roster has 17 players and 5 walk-ons, so 20 players and 9 walk-ons seems unlikely in that context, but not impossible. Don't believe our teams had many walk-ons back then because we were awful and walking on to the team was not seen as all that desirable. In fact, I recall officiating intramurals where some of the players seemed better to me than some of the ones that were actually on our roster!

And came across my Zoo Crew membership card for the 1987-88 season, Does anyone else have these, or will it be a valuable collector's item? Given the attendance back then, I suspect that there weren't many of these produced in the first place...

As an aside I did find this old Zoo Crew strory; looks like attendance improved after I graduated.

So you held attendance down?

The 'Cats once had an elite walk-on.

Hey, I was a Hoops Ref Winter Qtr ‘89-‘91. (Or at least a couple of those years.). My highlight was reffing the Purple league champ (more competitive) team against the Kellogg champ team. No shortage of testosterone on that court, let me tell you. Says the scrawny ref who called them fair.

Back when I refed hoops (85-89) they actually allowed scholarship athletes from other sports (most notably football) to play in the Purple league! And a TON of football players actually played...
