One thing I really liked: the young men and coaches from PSU were articulate. It’s a joy to hear anthletes actually communicate.

Also liked Jake Butt - he’s very articulate, analytical and comes off as a humble, well-spoken talking head. Not a typical Michigan azz by any means.

I didn’t get a chance to watch the whole thing yet, but I caught the beginning when they were interviewing Jim Knowles. Something that stuck with me from that interview was him saying that Franklin ran the program a little more old school style than some. He said there’s some old school traditions and values that Franklin has held onto at PSU that have been at PSU for a really long time. He finished with, “You don’t get that everywhere.” Now, that can be interpreted in many ways, but I took it as many of the values the Joe instilled such as being good students and young men. I also took the last part as a bit of an under the radar swipe at O$U. Just my interpretation of the interview. Decipher it as you like.

Knowles also talked at length about his Pennsy roots (from Philly) - how he dreamed of playing for PSU and JoePa as a youngster but just wasn't good enough (he went to, and played football for, Cornell). Said PSU has always been his dream coaching destination.... - said these things in response to Rick Pizzo's opening statement (framed as a question) where Pizzo essentially said... let's get right down to it, it's all about the Benjamins.... the only reason you took the PSU DC job was because they made you the highest paid DC in the Country - are you feeling the pressure of having to deliver being in that position.... Knowles essentially answered that it wasn't all solely about the $$$ - that aspect is earned by doing a consistently great job every year, every practice every minute... but said his decision was not simply about $$$.... went into the fact he is a "Pennsylvania guy" through and through and how he'd always dreamed of first playing at PSU, and then after pursuing coaching as a profession, coaching at PSU.... said he is where he has dreamed of being and looks forward to contributing in any, and every way, he can to help PSU win... said he was looking forward to climbing the mountain, but no he wasn't feeling any pressure.

Knowles is a really cerebral guy and it was a great interview - one of the best I've ever seen.

Inmates run the asylum at OSU is the cynical interpretation or he's not talking about OSU at all and just likes Franklin's old school rules.

Awesome…but when- oh-when will he win a big game or dare I say a big game on the road…on the latter he has fast approaching a dozen years…maybe if Krafty can sign him to a 20 year extension we’ll witness one.

Well, if you want to go over this again. What was Paterno’s record vs top 10 teams? Everyone loved how he handled the program, right? Were you? Or were you constantly clamoring for him to win a big game? Or a big game on the road? He was on a 45 year deal.

I haven't watched it yet nor am I likely to watch it. There is something about Dave Revsine that just gets under my skin. It's probably just me, not him but so what?

Yeah, he sucks. His voice doesn’t work for the stupid macho sports guy. “NOWWWWW!” Awful.

Look… it’s simple… there is only one reason PSU does not win the National Championship this year.

I wonder what Paterno’s last win vs. a top 10 team on the road was? Maybe the Ohio State game with Pryor?

Well that was a pretty big one. At osu and winning, that would be nice if we finally beat osu in their house. I was there in 2017 and hadn’t seen an epic collapse like that by psu. Then 2018 we did it again. Ugh. I’m really thinking of going because it would be nice to be there after a win. Think 2011 was last time we won there.

PSU needs to be in hunt for the National Championship at the end of the year. Stating that National Championship or nothing is silly. A missed extra point. A DB falling down, dropped passes, a couple of holding calls can all be the difference between winning and losing. I for one am excited about the opportunity in front of PSU this year. The team on paper does not have a readily identified weakness. Still not sold on LB play or back up DT play and the WR room needs to show on the field........but every team has some areas of concern. Lets hold on could be very fun.

They don't recruit as well or pay as well currently as tOSU or Texas. Injuries can and will occur, but certain ones could really hurt. WR's may not work out as advertised. Defense takes a bigger step back than anticipated. There are so many variables and a bit of luck needed to win a MNC to say there is only one reason is absurd as the dorks you golf with. ;)

You are correct… but I know people who could care less about those variables… if they lose any games… there is one reason!

He has won plenty of “big” games on the road. Just because a team is not top 10 ranked doesn’t mean a game against them isn’t a big game. I personally believe that looking at records against the ranking of your opponent is a red herring. Virtually all of the games Franklin has lost — at home and on the road and especially in the past 6 years — have been to teams which have outperformed PSU in recruiting and had a significantly higher blue chip ratio than PSU. To me, that is the benchmark which should be used. Yes, a blind squirrel gets a nut every once in a while, but beating teams with better talent doesn’t happen consistently anywhere in any sport. Now, you can say: “well, he needs to recruit better”, but we all know that is not a cut and dried situation and we all know that PSU doesn’t have the financial resources to compete at the level of OSU, Michigan, Oregon, etc, etc, etc.

Every game is a big game. Beating USC in OT last year was a big game but to be fair they finished 10th in the BiG with a 4-5 conference record.

There's no argument that OSU has recruited better than PSU but recruiting is part of the job. I would disagree that Michigan has recruited much better and we've done better than everybody else in the conference pre expansion.

I’d throw road wins at WVU, Wisky, and Minny as good wins also. Regardless of records, they can be difficult places to play and Wisky and Minny are well coached teams. Minny beat USC at home last year.

Aside from their loss to ND by 2 TDs, all of USC’s other losses were by 7 or less. I think they were better than their record indicated and have no problem calling it a quality road win.

FWIW Very good friend of mine is a Cornell alumna who was close to Knowles during their undergraduate days in Ithaca…. Right around when he was brought on board I asked her about him and she wasn’t even aware of his CFB accomplishments / career trajectory, as they had not been in contact in decades. I sent her an article about his hiring as DC - she was amused that the article painted him as an intellectual, almost as if he could be a history professor or a curator at an art museum “that’s hilarious- not him at all - Duke was a huge party guy and hardly studied… great guy tho ” … they were close, she said, as neither had much of a pot to piss in - unlike nearly all other Cornell kids … she recalled his dad was a police officer and was of relatively humble beginnings ….

It’s going to be a major challenge every year for Eastern teams to win @ USC, Washington and Oregon. UCLA is down, so I won’t give them the benefit of the doubt. You watch, those 3 maybe all 4 will win a lot of games they shoudnt. OSU would have won that game against OR 10 out of 10 times in Ohio.

Sure. Works both ways though. It favors the home team tremendously. The west coast B1G teams record playing in the “east” B1G last year was 2-7. Conversely, the east teams playing in the west were 3-7.
