The Big 12 was a short term deployment unless playoffs were extended so these realignments would stop.

Well we got that playoff increased to 12. Some breathed a sigh of relief.

What we forgot was the greed these bigger schools all have in common.

It was never about making the playoffs but more about getting their pockets full thus making bigger pockets.

The cash is the bottom line now. The playoff's and a title are just icing on the cake. Something for fans to brag about.

They are trying to consolidate them. I think it's a calculation that they want to take the 130+ D1 football programs and make those outside of around 50 schools irrelevant for all intents and purposes. Then spread those teams across 3-4 conferences and hope at least some from the populations that were predominantly fans of the recently made irrelevant programs latch onto the closest relevant program. Even if its only a small percentage its still a gain for these conferences and the blue bloods that drive them. For example, and this is assuming no logistical issues other than geography:

Make relevant Pitt, tOSU, UVA, NC State, Cincinnati, Maryland and Tennessee. Then have Penn State's fandom split between Pitt and Maryland. WVU between Pitt, Cincinnati, Maryland and UVA. Kentucky and Louisville between Cincinnati and Tennessee. Vanderbilt (stop laughing!) to Tennessee. Wake Forest between Tennessee and NC State. Duke and UNC between UVA and NC State.

Again this is just an example as there are multiple considerations, but it's just an illustration of the concept.
