Share the same sentiment. I like Drew for what he’s done at Baylor. It’s one of the best coaching turnarounds of all time and he’s built a nice program there.

I think he would have been a splashier hire from a media standpoint and Kentucky may have elevated his ceiling a notch but I was not excited about the style of play and didn’t think it was a great fit from the “ridding the program of Cal fatigue and NBA first culture” standpoint. We would have been watching much of the same

We'd be looking at 8-loss seasons every year (or double digits with the way the SEC is).. moderately talented teams, a bunch of first weekend exits, and MAYBE a final4.

It just wasn't going to cut it. Scott Drew would have been run out of here before long.

Or maybe Drew’s wife, I never wanted him to begin with but glad she wanted to stay in Waco. I wonder if Tyson would be willing to send some nuggets to Baylor on our behalf 😎.
Remarkable when you look at the candidates how perfectly this season has gone for UK. Hurley throwing tantrums and becoming the least liked CBB coach since K. Baylor struggling, including a blowout loss to Gonzaga. Cal definitely struggling and very unlikely to make the tournament. Even Donovan and the Bulls are 10th in the Eastern Conf, although I think NBA records are less about the coach than the organization.

I was hoping Donovan would want the job but after that I knew I wasn’t on board with drew, I just didn’t think he “got” what it meant to be here. I honestly wanted Pearl, I’ll admit and still will say he’s a good coach and someone that would have embraced bbn fully. I had my questions about Pope initially, but he definitely pushed all the right buttons when he got here and thankful he’s leading the Cats.

Wanted Pope over Drew. Yes, he did win a title at Baylor. However, he won his only title in that Covid season. Not taking anything away from him, but that was a totally different season than any other in history. There’s an argument to be made that he may not have that title under normal circumstances. JMO.

At the time I wasn't crazy about Drew but thought he could be a good fit for UK. I preferred him over Pope when it all went down but it's pretty clear now that Mitch made the right decision and Pope is the right guy for UK.
lol Mitch didn’t make that decision. Drew did.
Mitch had one guy only targeted. His pal and Church revival buddy Scott Drew.
Pope was plan J.

If Drew's wife would've been onboard with the move, then we'd have Scott Drew. Pope was a great second choice no doubt about it. I'm very pleased with what he's been able to do in such a short time.
Dang guys did you guys NOT follow the coaching search.
Pope was not his second choice.
Pope was plan J after striking out on all the so called big hires.
Mitch lucked out with Pope almost as much as he did with Cal violating his own contract.

I've said it a few times, but I would have been less excited about a Drew hire than I would have been for a Cal return. At least with Cal returning you could see the light at the end of the tunnel, and if his UK team this year was as bad as Arkansas is this year it would have been his last year for sure.

With Drew we would have been signing up for at least five years of mediocrity. Probably more than that because Drew and Mitch are friends and he wouldn't want to fire a friend (assuming Mitch stayed here a while longer). At his peak Drew is just a worse version of Cal. Neither of them would have UK as their #1 priority, as Drew has said his first priority as a coach is to get his players into heaven, basketball is secondary.

There’s also an argument to be made that he wins in ‘20 if the tournament was held. They were supposedly the best team.

But I didn’t want him here anyway.

Thankfully we got who we got. 👍🏀

It’s going be crazy to look back at all of the dominos that fell to make this happen.

Muss voluntary leaves Ark, Cal gets caught flirting with other schools and is basically forced to go to Ark, Drew’s family doesn’t like Lexington, Hurley turns down insane money to go for the 3peat, Pope is hired at UK in a surprising move. One of those things where it seems to have worked out well for UK.

Don't forget Einfeld leaving USC for SMU.

I wanted Pearl. Dude would have crawled on glass from Auburn to Lexington to take the role.

But damn I'm glad we got Pope instead.
At one point I think that was true for sure but now that he's established more in Auburn and had so much success, he's very happy there.

I wanted him, too...but ideally like 4 or 5 years ago instead of enduring the Cal spiral. Think he would've been quite solid here. And trust me, that's a big turnaround for me because I've spent a ton of my time as a fan HATING Pearl.

That was my 2nd guess as I live in Clarksville indiana by the ohio River. Nice talking with you Blue brotha!
Born in Ashland, and lived in Louisville for a while as a kid. Lived all over with HS years in Indiana. Actually an IU grad who has never supported IU. But my daughter is a UK grad! Out of state tuition was a no go for me.

100%. If we could have had Bruce when Cal wanted to leave for UCLA I would have taken it. Love Pope though and am glad he is here. Special times ahead

Full disclosure...........This was my list

1. Pearl
2. Hurley
3. Donovan
4. Oats
5. Drew

Fifty feet of crap

Pope
Our lists are pretty damn similar. I love Pope and what he has done and I'm a huge supporter of him. I still feel like Pearl was the best option in terms of winning it all, but I also know it never was going to happen. Drew was pretty far down, my list, but above Pope and I'm glad he turned it down. It would have been reminiscent of Tubby ball imo.

Im glad we got Pope, but with the way Pearl is just dominating a very hard SEC right now? Man oh man we’d be giddy as hell in the Commonwealth.

This was one of my takes. I just looked back and I posted this, "Bruce Pearl would kill it here. He would have the same drive as Cal had when he first arrived….no titles and dying to prove people wrong. He’d be so hungry for a title and it would be his last opportunity. Get him in here for a 5ish year run and hope the next candidate emerges at that time."

I think Pearl would have been loved by the fanbase too. He and Pope would have been popular hires.

Whoever called that Mexican restaurant should have two comped lower level tickets for life.
It was me. I was just trying to order a burrito with chips and salsa to go........was hoping Drew would bring me some of that Tex Mex when he came to Lexington...
Oh well. Seems it all worked out for the best for all involved, other than I didn't get my burrito....

Way to raise them right—lol. I know it’s tough even is So. Indiana.

My youngest would have loved to go there but he wasn’t D1 material so he’s playing ball at a small school and loving it. We spend a lot of time on the phone everyday talking UK sports.

That's what we as parents all strive for to see our children flourish. It's a nice bonus when they keep in contact with us.
