Weird zone

Part of the problem last night was the weird match up zone they played. Often times the switching was so pronounced that penn state guards could just wait until our D confused themselves and the seas would part to the rim.

(Also 9 times out 10 it's Demps out of position.)

My vote is to stick with a trapping, adjusting 2/3.

I agree, a matchup zone should not be so complicated. Stay in your area, cover a guy if he comes near, and rotate the zone as needed to compensate for overloading on one side. Half the time it looks like multiple guys are confused as to whether we are playing man or zone on any given possession, and all it takes is one person to be confused about who/where they are guarding and the whole defense falls apart. And yes, if you watch Demps on defense you can very clearly see the spiral out of control that he initiates most of the time. I need InsideNU to do one of their video reviews that they do during football to point this out to people.

I believe NU should use a zone against more athletic teams but I believe man to man could have been employed against PSU

We were also stonger inside than PSU but all we did was throw up forced 3 pointers

For the most part, the 3s were open shots and not forced. Also we had 41 shots (over 61% of total shots) from inside the arc (where we were shooting over 56% ). By contrast PSU only had 44 shots total of which 21 (48%) were from 3. Just saying we were not just throwing up forced threes.

PSU coach summed it up perfectly; we (PSU) made open shots, they (NU) didn't. No mystery,
