Was going to say Iowa State going to get beat like a red headed step child but didn't want to offend Bucky. She is very sensitive.

Well, this isn't good. If the past is any indicator (as in, the last 5 years or so), a strong second half isn't likely.

I believe this program could have done amazing things over the last half-decade...if those associated with it knew that basketball games were 40 minutes instead of 20.

I was wrong. Good. I'm happy they won. But let's not pretend this game is one to thump your chest over. This was a double-digit underdog that WVU needed FTs down the stretch to win. Happy for the win, but this wasn't a good game.

WVU only beat 1-3 Iowa State, 70-65. Despite 36 points from Culver and McBride. And 19 more made free throws than the Cyclones.

Best thing you can say about this performance is that #7 WVU won. Ugly, but won.

Had to sweat it out.

WVU missed TEN free throws in the first half!

3 for 14 in 3-point shots!

Only out-rebounded Iowa State by 5.

Too many layups and close shots for Cyclones.

But, WVU won.

This won’t do against Kansas on December 23.

Chest thumping? Who TF is thumping their chest? Nobody. This win sure beats folding your tent and quitting early. I'll take an ugly win over an ugly loss ANY day.

Win is win. I’ll take it. I complain when I think we get robbed by the refs so I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t admit that we benefited from a few calls tonight. Guarantee we won’t get any of those in the Phog on Tuesday.

Like Huggins, take the win, but note that playing below your abilities for long stretches of a game is going to bite you in the ***. If you want to win a championship, be it conference or NCAA, the Richmond performance must be the norm not the exception. So far WVU has played too close to tonight's level in all but 2 other games this season and it's not going to cut it in the Big 12 grind if WVU wants to be a serious contender. With 7 games under the belt, it's not unreasonable to expect better.

No way in hell the Richmond performance would be the norm for any team in the country. Need to be somewhere in the middle of these 2 games should be the norm.

McCabe is terrible. Kid is bringing nothing to the team right now.

He played 2 minutes. Get over it.

do you not think the bad shot and the even worse turnover put him on the bench for the rest of the game? We were up 7 when he came in and down 1 when he left. I don’t know the answer for him, but he is definitely lost right now. WVU needs to find a back up point guard soon cause McBride cannot continue to play 38 minutes a game!

He was in for 2 minutes. I highly doubt that caused the lead to flip in that short amount of time. Besides he was only in for 30 second sif that much so I don't think you can lay blame on McCabe.

Why can't he play 38minutes? JC played 40 minute games. Is McBride not tough enough?

Make our Foul shots and it's an 18 point win. Continue missing like the first half and it's a loss.

That'l kind of performance is what it will take to get the better of Kansas, Baylor, and TTU for the league crown. Being consistent is why KU mostly wins the league. While WVU's best teams may get the best of the Jayhawks once, our Mountaineers have always had few dropped games to lower level conference foes that the league winner does not.

I'll take a split from those 3 any day. ISU is not going to play the way they did the rest of the year. Their game plan was give the ball to Bolton drive to the hoop and throw up a play ground type shot or pitch to their 3 point shooter for 3. It worked well for them as we had nobody that could guard Bolton.

ISU defensive scheme was obvious let the guards shoot if they're missing and foul anyone that gets close to the rim. It worked in first half but failed in 2nd half as the guards were able to get to the rim and make foul shots.

We did pick up foul shooting in second half, but as you say fouling some of our guys in the low block is a legit defensive strategy. WVU had a big FT and TO advantage, but the game was close. That wasn't all Bolton shooting lights out as ISU keeping up with WVU on the boards was a big factor. That's the head scratcher as ISU has no business being competitive w/ this team when it comes to rebounds.

Exactly. I think it comes down to Oscar being lazy. He looks like he had not worked out all summer. ISU did a great job of blocking out. Their offensive rebounding left me stunned as they got shot attempt after shot attempt.

This comes down to the team having no leadership on the floor. McBride or Culver need to be that guy that takes that mantle. Culver is great in the paint but lacks in the skill of being a vocal leader. McBride excels at being a leader by playing harder when things are tough. The team seems to respond off his defense. McBride just needs to be more vocal. Perhaps that has to do with being a younger guy and lacks the courage t speak out. But somebody needs to take that step to gather the team and say hey we are better than this. This is what we are going to do. Just don't have that yet. This team gets lazy and quits moving around on offense. A leader would recognize This and regroup.

Wouldn't hurt to have another consistent offensive weapon as well. I wasn't confident in open looks by anyone outside of McBride last night. Cottrell, Taz, Matthew's, or McNeil needs to be able to knock down some open or lightly contested shots. McNeil seems like you get all or nothing when it comes to his shooting.

Its what happens when our shooters are missing shots and the other team is making everything. All that matters is that we gutted out a win in the end.
