When I got home from the Cleveland State game last night, I went to stream the radio feed of the second half of the NU game on the WGN radio stream. I just kept getting a message that the broadcast was unavailable in my area (Cleveland suburbs). Has anybody else outside of the Chicago market experienced this? Is there a “workaround“?

I’d suggest downloading The Varsity app. That’s how I stream the broadcasts. Free, and despite how the app makes it appear, you don’t need to sign up or sign in.
Second the varsity app. My only trouble is i have it installed on my ipad, but cannot get it to function on my iphone. And if you want to stream BTNplus and listen to WGN on the same device, it doesn’t work…
The Varsity Network app is the only way now to hear Dave Eanet's coverage of NU sports. WGN is no longer allowed to stream their broadcast directly.
If you live in the Chicago area I believe that you can still get the live broadcast over AM radio. But anywhere else you have to use The Varsity Network app over the Internet.
There is usually a short delay of about 10 seconds behind the TV. At least that's what I have using DISH to watch the game. By using the DVR for the game and controlling when it starts I can sync up Dave's broadcast perfectly with the TV action.

When I tried the Varsity Network app, WGN stream just said the game audio couldn't be streamed in my area. Same for Tune In
I only had success by going to the schedule at NUSports.com and selecting the audio link by the game. Then I did the sync to the TV stream in the same way you mentioned.
It sounds like there might be a difference in using The Varsity Network app between football and basketball coverage. I've only used it for football so far. Haven't tried it yet for basketball.
On the NUSports.com page for football games there is an actual link to The Varsity Network app. On the basketball page there is no corresponding link. However, I've never had to use that link for football games. I just go directly to The Varsity Network app on my iphone and the game appears there.
I'll try to look tonight and see if the basketball game appears on the app in the same way as the football games.
Varsity app works fine for bb (WGN audio broadcast). Just follow northwestern and you will get all the broadcasts listed
