What are Riley's expectations really?

Every new coach comes in and says the goal is to win championships. Since NU just fired a 9- 10 win coach with the stated reason he did not win the big games this sentiment becomes rather important with our new staff.

I know Riley has the best of intentions and is extremely well thought of in coaching circles - what I do not get is his decisions in regards to assistants. Keep in mind the goal is to win titles here not to win 8 or 9 games

Langsdorf - Thought of as an up and coming assistant - however there is some issue with his time at OSU - In 2008 Riley handed over play calling to Langsdorf after things started to falter in 2012 he took the play calling duties back. It was thought at the time Langsdorf was to committed to the pass and fans were grumbling with calling pass plays on 3rd and 2 when the running game was going just fine. Shortly thereafter when the opportunity arose he took the job with the Giants - So why in the world would Riley want to try the whole thing over again at NU - why give this guy control over the plays when it didnt work the last time.

Banker - In the last ten years Bankers defenses have been ranked: Total defense #58 and scoring defense #64. This guy is what he is it is simply not going to magically change. My question to Riley is "Where are your loyalties?" You were hired to win titles to do so you are going to need to have championship defenses. Does anyone really see Banker being able to have consistently good defenses

I want Riley as our coach but only if his loyalties are to the team and fans and not to his buddies. He was not not hired as a package deal. Riley deserves some time to right the ship but I think the first step should be for him to critically review his own thinking about what is best for this team

Shocker. Another new thread discussing a topic that has been discussed repeatedly in other threads.

I would not anticipate Riley making any staff changes. These are Riley's guys and he will go down with the ship if he has to...which is fine.

If you want to talk expectations for the year:

Here are mine:

#1Play better this year. I want to see improvement in the offensive line and secondary. Would like to see 2 wins to close out the year-but at this point, one more win than we should get doesn't matter that much.

#2 Show the ability to recruit and get the roster cleaned up. Also, by the time the spring comes, I want to see football players that made significant strides in the S&C program.

#3 Next season the goal should probably be 8-9 regular season wins. There are a lot of key returning players. A lot of young guys that received valuable experience this year due to injuries. I want to see significant improvement.

Riley has said he wants to win championships. There's no reason to question otherwise, even if you don't find him that great a coach.

I would speculate he came for a cup of coffee based on how this football team has performed - because I am hoping that is all the longer he stays in Lincoln.

Let's not be stupid and micro-manage the HC. You give him freedom and control and after a period of time evaluate the results and make a decision to fire or extend. I generally dislike the phrase "it is what it is" but playing on that phrase "we are where we are". Nothing for us to do here and now but show support.
