What I liked about Drew Barker's performance

First start - 54% completion in rain, snow and blowing wind conditions. Quick release, 4 of 6- 3rd down conversions, moving toward the line of scrimmage when he was getting sacked, confidence. My concerns were that the cold seem to bother him(hands), don't know if he's tried glove on throwing hand, the really bad over throws, didn't seemed to have that 6th sense when it was time to run rather than get sacked. I felt like he was an improvement, but next week will be a huge upgrade in defensive talent he will face.

1H conditions weren't bad at all with little wind down on the field. Net, judge his 1H performance as if it had be 60 degrees & no wind.

I thought he managed the game very well, but did have an overthrow or two and a throw way behind one of our WRs. Which happens no matter who the QB is.

He also does not appear to get happy feet - seemed to calmly stay in the pocket until the very last second possible.

All in all, a solid first starting performance. Should provide him some confidence going into UL game.

I imagine we are going to focus on the run against UL, much like last night. Takes pressure of Barker. Let's hope for a big win so we can get to a bowl game.

I realize it was against a weak offense, but for his first time as the leader, I thought he did a good job. What I liked, was, he didn't try and force anything, just took what the defense give him. The other thing was NO interceptions, and loss of a lot of yards on sacks.
The temperature was cold, and it was windy, and rain and snow in the second half. That has to effect your throwing when your hands are cold.
Louisville will be very telling for us.

OLD STOLL FIELD GUY!

Are you saying his performance should be judged as if it were 60 degrees and no wind? It was 37 degrees and 27 mph wind. That's a long way from 60 degrees and no wind. At least that is what they were saying on TV about the temp and the winds.

just my take. I didn't see anything that showed that he was any better than towels. its hard to judge with it being his first start and the team they were playing was lacking talent.

I liked the way he stayed in the pocket; he appeared to go through his progressions more effectively; his passes, though limited in number, looked better to me; and there seemed to be more enthusiasm on offense and defense. Go Cats!!

He played just fine. Let's see what he does against a tougher D this coming week where we have to be more balanced on offense.

Do what? It was windy the entire game. Had he duplicated the 1st half he'd ended up with around 250 yards passing.

Thought he played well considering. Some of those throws that were off seemed to have gotten pushed by the wind a bit. Hard to say how accurate his passing was with how the conditions were. Kid has a quick release that's for sure and I liked how assertive and sure of himself he seemed. Did well avoiding the pass rush at times too. Hopefully he can notch a win next week to get us to a bowl. Our running game should help, just hope that we aren't playing from behind too much.

It was cold as hell and pretty dang windy. It was evident in the kicking game and the direction of the kick.

People just have to realize that Barker and Towles are both products of the offensive line and the protection they get. No matter who we throw out there they are going to be under a crap ton of pressure. Ultimately I don't think either of their numbers will improve or either of their games progress much until they are given proper protection and able to show their skill sets. Hard to show your skills if you're running for your life every snap.

Again, all in all he played well. His job wasn't to win the game, it was to not lose it. He made enough good throws to be encouraged and enough bad ones to be concerned. Just keep getting reps and move forward.

Obviously this from someone sitting at home switching channels under a blanket. Cmon it was a terrible night to play QB. I was there.

My take, he did some good things and bad. Like the way he gets it out quick but needs to learn to read the defense better in zone coverage...could have had a few pics yesterday. That will get better with time and calming down too.

But One thing I liked he did was execute the play fakes and play action much better. I noticed Patrick getting real sloppy with the play action to the point the defense never reacted to it because we were barely going through the motion of it. Goes back to my theory that it's not as much the plays you call but how you run them. Run it crisply with a hard fake and Baker gets a step on his defender instead of struggling to get open.

I think this had something to do with helping the run game look more efficient too. I know the bigger reason was who we were playing, and I think there was a bigger focus on running it straight ahead that I believe cam from the coaches in the week leading up to the game, but they seemed to execute with much rhythm in the running game and I think Drew had a little to do with that in how he managed the snap and kept things leaning forward.

I saw one good thing and one bad thing compared to Towles.

The good
He seemed comfortable in the pocket and stayed in it and stepped into it. Something I cannot remember the last time Towles did.

The bad
His decision making was awful at times. I think he threw 2 very bad passes to covered receivers that against better teams would have been interceptions. The showel pass to Conrad when pressured is as big a no no as there is. He cannot try to force plays.

Look at everyone acting like they don't know Towles will trot out to start at Louisville. The shovel pass wasn't risky, if he dropped it... simple incompletion, it wasn't a lateral.

The shovel pass was risky. Considering his face was buried in a guy, he had no was of knowing if someone was near Conrad. Also the way he threw it could also be mistaken for a fumble pretty easy. Looked like a JLo play.

Play action usually works out better when we have a successful run game. Don't think it was the "fake" as much as the success we had running the ball. Barker played ok, and done what he was asked to do. Had a throw to Timmons that this week is a pick six and a jailbreak screen play that was god awful. But your gonna have bad throws every game. Some times you get lucky they hit grass. But it can work same way on good throws. They get picked sometimes too. (Deep ball towles threw against miss state.). Ball was a quarter inch off from perfect and was a good throw. Db get a nail on it and falls right where he was landing)

Solid first game for him. But i don't see where his release is any quicker than Towles. He keeps the ball lower than Towles an then he has a larger windup to compensate for it. Still solid nothing fancy performance.

Barkers release is a lot qiucker than Towles. The only issue I saw was he tried to put too much heat on some throws, especially the one overthrow in the endzone. Maybe he was trying to compensate for the wind, but he'll learn.

UK also threw over the middle, that will open things up if Barker can do that Saturday.

UK totally had this game regardless of who the QB was. Heck if JoJo had lined up in the Wildcat he might have had 6 or 7 TDs himself. But what it did was allow Barker to get his feet wet before the UofL game. The game itself should have given the entire team a lift.

It was by far the worst conditions for a home game since the Vandy game in 2008. That was an 8 pm game. It started snowing in the afternoon and continued through most of the game

Didn't see it so I can't really comment on anything other than the raw numbers. He had a 92.54 QBR (not very good) against a defense with a 138.8 Pass Defense Efficiency Rating (also not very good, #92). From his brief earlier stint about all I could tell is he is considerably slower than Towles who is deceptively fast.

Peace

I liked his release and he seemed to be more accurate but I dont know about the percentage. he earned a second start so I figure he did better than Patrick.
