What is going on with refs in our home games?

Do they hate / not respect Chris Collins?

I don’t get it - the refs for the Illinois game were bad and then tonight they took it to a whole new level. Pardon and Law called for every ticky tack off the ball foul. Iowa driving to the hoop gets a bunch of marginal / zero contact fouls and extra free throws, and yet Taylor and Law constantly bumped on their drives and get nothing. To cap it off, Garza elbows Benson and they review for a flagrant and then reverse the foul cal! I’ve never seen that for this type of call - Benson was not moving and Garza went forward with his elbow into Benson. So now offensive players can just straight up elbow anyone that’s close to them? ********.

Iowa shot 10 more free throws than NU, and win by 10. The “analysts” on Big Ten Network are putrid - Crispin is intolerable and NEVER mentions poor calls against NU, even in a game with as lopsided officiating as this. When Garza clearly did a finger roll and dropped the ball out of bounds right in front of a ref - ref incorrectly gave the ball to Iowa and Crispin’s only comment is that they could have called the foul on NU.

Something odd is going on - tonight was just ridiculous.

I have two issues.

Pardon's fourth foul came after Garza used his elbow to hook Dererk so that he could move around him....and then there was contact and Pardon got called for the foul. It was a foul. That followed a more egregious and blatant foul. NU should have had the ball and Pardon should not have had the opportunity to commit the foul.

On the much discussed reversal of the Garza offensive foul Crispin is correct that Garza is entitled to his space. However, their closeness came because both were competing for a rebound and ended up in the same spot. Garza then eyed Benson and swung his elbow into Benson's jaw. That was premeditated and foul anywhere on the court.

Otherwise I though NU was infuriatingly sloppy with reach ins and grabby out on the perimeter.

Garza was hooking, elbowing, and otherwise initiating contact all night,. The fact that he had 3 fouls in a game where our center had NINE was just lol horrendous. Changed the whole game.

I've got a $100 that says the Big Ten comes out tomorrow with a statement that the refs screwed up the Garza elbow to Benson's face.

I've got another $100 that says the statement will say the mistake is understandable because Benson did violate the space Garza had established, blah de blah de blah.

I think we clearly have an issue in that Collins is not viewed favorably by the refs. He's viewed as a bigger prick than Fran. That's a problem.

Huh? What knowledge do you base this bigger prick than Fran comment?

One ref desperately wanted to throw out a white haired fan sitting courtside. He and the head of facilities had something like 3 heated conversations during the second half. Of course, that type of fan is highly likely to be a big money donor, so there was 0 chance he was going anywhere.

Wouldn’t be surprised if that ref spends most of his time jetting around smaller conferences and high schools.

Edit: Wow...if the ESPN box score is to believed, one of those guys has reffed the Final Four and the other was an alternate. Don't know what to say about that performance from them.

I saw that too. I also saw (earlier) one of the refs instruct Collins in no uncertain terms to back off. They seemed pretty thin-skinned tonight.
Yup, despite the fact that Fran the Screamer was on the other bench tonight. Him, they sonehow tolerate, though he had little to complain aboit this evening...

I thought for sure they were going to call that one on Garza. The ref even made a hooking motion which I thought meant he saw the obvious hook by Garza on that drive. That one was crazy.

McCaffrey was given a low key warning last night by the bald ref.

The poor officiating was not a one-sided thing at all. There was absolutely no consistency to what they were doing.

On the radio, Joey argued that some new rule about an elbow to the upper body constituted a flagrant foul and the ball for NU. Obviously, that didn't happen.

I hate blaming the refs, but they definitely weren't very good last night. Our defense was bad a few times, but then they called multiple ticky tack fouls. The team got frustrated from that and never really recovered. At one point in the 2nd half the count was 9-3 in fouls I think. Collins got upset and then the refs started calling random stuff on Iowa. It was just crap. Unless it's a sure foul, put the whistle away & let them play. Too many of these games lose all flow due to the refs.

And I've never seen the upon further review we are taking the foul away call.

Not to mention the out of bounds ball off Garza's hand when the ref was standing right there was stunningly bad.

Honest question, guys. Admittedly, I'm far from the most observant among us, but it hasn't been apparent to me that Collins does any more - or more egregious - bellyaching than any typical coach. IF, in fact, there's truth to the notion of him being viewed as a prick, what is it that he's doing that I'm missing?
