I do know he received a year extension for making the sweet 16 last year. Barnhart hasn’t learned a thing.
AI says his buyout is 75% of 5 years at 5.5 million. My math says 21 million. Ugh

Pope would be owed 75 percent of the amount remaining on the deal if he were to be fired without cause — the same figure as former head coach John Calipari.

If Kentucky makes a Sweet 16 appearance, Pope’s contract will automatically extend one season and includes a $250,000 bonus.

I can't believe that a UK coach would get rewarded for making a freaking sweet sixteen. Mitch Barnhart is an idiot.

It’s a 75% of remaining pay buyout over monthly installments with a duty to mitigate from Pope.

He has 3 original years left on his contract and he earned an additional year at 6.25 tacked onto the end for making the sweet 16 last year(remember the 6 win Stoops extend year auto thing…same concept).

So 23.6 mill left on deal. 17.7 Mill over 4 years monthly with a potential offset of some would be the buyout.

This is where Pope's love for the program will be tested. Will he acknowledge that stepping down would be best for the program and do it even though it's probably not best for him (in the near term)? We'll see...I hate that he's in that position , but we can blame Mitch for once-again putting someone with no pedigree in a position to fail while blowing someone else's money doing it

If Pope doesn’t watch it, we might not be a top seed in the tournament, we might be in the 8,9 game. 🤣

There shouldn't be perks in a contract for just making a sweet 16 at a big program. Also, at the same there should be consequences in a contract for not doing well. If you have a subpar year, a year should be taken off your contract and you should have to pay a fine.

Let’s hope he resigns, but if not, what will we owe him at year’s end?
I'm not 100% on this but I think its 17,625,000.

The way I understand it Pope gets a 1 year extension for making the Sweet 16. We will owe him 75% of his remaining contract

I came up with basically the same thing. Because of the Sweet 16 a 1 year extension was added. That means going into this season he had 5 years to go. His starting salary was 5M and 250,000 is added each year. So his season contracts look like this (I think). We would owe 75% of his remaining contract.

2025 or 1A = 5,000,000
2026 or 1B = 5,250,000
2027 = 5,500,000
2028 = 5,750,000
2029 = 6,000,000
2030 = 6,250,000

So after this season we would owe for 2027 thru 2030 for 23,500,000. 75% of that = 17,625,000.

The 1 thing I'm not certain about is if he would still get the 250,000 increase each year. If not his contract value for 2027 thru 2030 would be 21,000,000 with a 75% buyout of 15,750,000.

Thats a big and important difference.

Whatever respect I have for him as a person will be gone if he refuses to step down at the end of the season. He’d be stealing money from UK and the fans if he runs it back another year.
