Caught a thread like this on another board.

Cable TV, cell phones, internet are all part of everyday life now.

So what is on the horizon in he next 10-20 years?

The other thread had a lot of posters saying that self driving cars will be the next breakthrough.

finished up a conference this weekend in Chicago and one of the speakers was talking about AI, robots, etc. This may have been shown on here before but this video of an ai is exciting and frightening all at the same time.

That video is less freaky if you understand programming. That is a limited subset of questions. Real life takes much more. Just think about the amount of censors and computing power it is taking Google to build a driverless car. We do that everyday while barely paying attention.

also -- optical invisibility is already here with the military

I'd say that CERN isa doing some things that might push the limits -- they once said they were actually seeking to prove the existence of "other dimensions"

genetic manipulation is a huge area to watch though IMO'

no….really……you should look into it

Hologram tech. And fully integrated tech.

I have an idea for hologram tech. If I were motivated, I would invent hologram tech for dementia caregivers.

Take a photo of primary caregiver, turn primary into hologram. Then use the hologram caregiver for their loved one with dementia so primary caregiver gets some respite.

Wireless electricity. Read an article a few years ago where someone invented a tv without plugging it in. Had very limited range at the time but can see it eventually getting better.

Battery technology will change everything.

Tesla is not a car company, it is a battery company.

Will they create a capacattery, or batteracitor? That would be the thing. Charges as quickly as a capacitor, discharges as slowly as a battery.

Japan is also vested in robot care providers because they have a declining population and don't want non-Japanese races to live in their country as cheap labor.

USB-C - much faster data speeds, can be used as the power cord for devices, also can replace HDMI cables, reversible, universal. Once Apple starts replacing the lightning connector with USB-C, it's really going to take off.

3D printing

Virtual Reality/Occulus Rift - netflix and hulu have jumped on board so it definitely has content "power brokers" behind it now.

Quick charge has been a pretty huge battery innovation, and within the past year wireless quick charging was unveiled. Several extra hours of cell phone use on a 15 minute charge? It's crazy. One of my friends has a phone with the latest version of quick charge. My next phone will for sure have that.

The two things I feel are poised for real growth are thermal storage/transfer due to graphene and interpersonal dynamics as in developing teams.

I am amazed how many young people think of cars as just a means of transport. I really think our kids will be very receptive to driverless cars.

I think the continues trend in wearable health monitoring technology is going to continue. Fitness is still in and everyone wants an edge in training. Can you develop technology that monitors calorie intake so logging food is no longer necessary? Lots of cool stuff already mentioned though.

Bionics will be big. The first major breakthrough, a bionic lens for the eye is just about to clear clinical trials.

I also look for Drone Technology to improve significantly especially on the military side of things. It isn't inconceivable that we will no longer send manned fighters/bombers into combat. Much cheaper and easier to train remote operators and it would open all kinds of doors when it comes to design and capabilities of the aircraft themselves.

It isn't hard to envision a future where we no longer own cars. We might see the beginning of that in ten years. Instead of owning a car you simply use an uber like service where an automated car picks you up and takes you where you need to go. It could even be tied to your calendar app so requesting the vehicle (including the size for the number of passengers) happens automatically. No need for parking, insurance, maintenance, etc. Cost savings, especially in an urban area could be enormous.

Education will move more and more into an online environment. Especially when it come to higher ed. The cost savings are just too significant to ignore.

As was mentioned before, monitoring of our health by various wearables and other devices will increase. They are already developing contact lenses that would monitor sugar/glucose levels through your tears. I also look for someone to release a toilet in the not too distant future that will do instantaneous urinalysis and stool samples. Sounds gross, but it will do a lot when it comes to early detection and prevention. The biggest obstacle will be how to make certain insurance companies don't use this data to drive up premiums.

alot of good stuff on here. The amount of gamechanger technologies on the horizon are breathtaking. Will completely change/destroy how we live, depending on how you wanna look at it.

Need something that will take over bluetooth too though.

Pretty sure I recall Bill Gates saying a few years ago that a few years from then the notion of sending off your 18 year old across the state/country to live in a dorm so he could go to class on that campus would be a thing of the past. He/she would just go in the other room and logon to go to class. I'm not doing his words justice, but that was the essence. Which of course makes perfect sense - although probably a pretty frightening thought if your a college administrator.

The current emphasis in the health care payor world is all about improving health. All about intervention/slowing disease progression. They realize the old model (you pay premiums, you go to the doctor, they pay claims) just isn't viable any longer. Getting data generally, and especially the kind of data you reference, is exactly what they want.....

Not really. Online classes are much more profitable to schools.
Depends on what position you are in. Online classes threatens pretty much every single job that requires people to physically attend the school, like residence life, recreation, athletics, campus police, health/wellness center (unless the department is radically changed), whoever is in charge of overseeing fraternities/sororities. Also Physical Plant takes a significant hit as well when you don't have sprawling campuses with dozens of academic and residence buildings.

Bill Gates is a nerd who doesn't understand the social component of the American college experience.

He was surrounded by Ivy League geniuses his whole life - had no need to make social connections, and met his wife when she was his employee.
