What reaction would BCG get in Rupp?

We all know the BCG era in UK didn't end up so great but there were some good moments in there I think.

With the passage of time how do you think the Rupp crowd would treat BCG as the opposing coach? Let's say Tarleton State ends up on the schedule next November.

His tenure ended up being terrible, but it was so short-lived that I would think most fans wouldn't react much at all.

Plus, once fans realized that he had a problem with alcoholism, many would likely have more compassion on him than they would someone like Cal who was just a narcissistic jerk to the fans.

This. I don't think the fanbase cares enough to muster anything other than the slightest polite applause. And maybe a few scattered boos. The dude just doesn't matter.

I mean this isn't the University of Billy Clyde!

I don't think really any reaction. He was here a year longer than a Cal recruit. It's such a blip in our storied history that he will be the guy in 50 years if you ask who were all of Kentucky's coaches after Rupp, he will be the one that people always forget.

I agree to a point but I think there was a lot of hostility towards Sutton and the rumors of his drinking were rampant. But with the NCAA trying to kill the program, for a long time I thought it would be brutal for Sutton to play us but when we won it all in 1996 and the success we had coupled with the horrible plane crash involving some of the OSU staff and players, UK fans were ready to move past it for good.

Agreed. He wasn't here enough to do any real damage. Plus, whatever his faults were - and he had a lot - I do think most people feel he was trying to win games.

Cal was here long enough to actually do significant damage and wasn't even really trying to win games. I look on him much more unfavorably than I do BCG.

My first game as Rupp with my own money was UK vs Missouri State during his first year. I had a period I didn't follow UK as hard in the last few years of Tubby (I was also deployed).

His win/loss record wasn't elite but I loved Liggins, Patterson, Harrelson, and Kevin Galloway. I also love the stories that game out after he left. I'd give him the standing O.

Can't see that ever happening. JMO, but I think most everyone would like to forget that BCG ever coached here. Another MB head scratcher.

He also signed his contract on a napkin because he’s stupid and made him easy to get rid of.

I remember being at the senior night loss to Georgia and people throwing crap at him walking out.

His best moment was beating Vandy and seeing Joe and Ramek talk to the fans (standing on the media table) after a senior night win the previous year.

Probably a lot of....who dat? Followed by polite golf clapping. Then indifference for the rest of the game.

He would receive a modest applause, I suspect, simply recognizing that he was a coach and part of KY basketball history.
There would be no reason not to acknowledge that, in my opinion, but little more.

At this point I look at BCG as the guy who recruited Miller, Liggins and Patterson... all of whom were instrumental in getting UK back. He also forced Mitch to go get a winner in Cal because of how big of a disaster he was.
Tubby had already heavily recruited Patterson, BCG just sealed a deal probably already done.

Quiet polite applause and then ignore - that's the most likely outcome. People still talk about the bizarre behavior, so it's not like people have forgotten. Banishing Harrellson to the stall, not acknowledging Meeks record setting scoring game, not signing his contract (!) and just in general being unable to cope with the demands of being the coach of the most storied program in college basketball.

Just read a quote from Harrellson where he said his teammates told him he should have flushed the commode during his "time out". Gillispie would have probably had a stroke.

Polite applause I think.

Dude suffered from alcoholism. Not an excuse, but he's cleaned up his life it seems.

I have no ill will towards the man.

It wasn't a head scratcher when he was hired, though. He looked like an up and comer coming off that NCAA tournament win over Louisville. However, some people don't like the limelight and the pressure put on them to succeed. He was in over his head here at Kentucky. Good thing we didn't have to endure much of his tenure.

100% correct. He would have been hired by almost any AD in the country back then. The revisionist history comes to play here big time.

I’d cheer him.

He had literally one bad year. The crappy result at the end of his first season was exclusively about PPat busting his tire.

Dude had plenty of personal demons but they just never did us any net harm at all. If I’m gonna be adult enough to make myself not boo narcissist program-whipping Cal when he comes back, then of course I’m gonna give poor old Billy Clyde a little cheer.

Sue me.

I would clap for Gillispie. His two years of coaching were abysmal, but i respect all our coaches and players over the years. He has worked hard to improve his life and I have nothing ill toward the man. He just wasn’t cut out to be coach at Kentucky

I wouldn’t have much of a reaction. He took on a challenge and unfortunately failed. Who hasn’t done that at some point in their life. Doesn’t make him a bad guy. It was a quick 2 years and he was gone and didn’t really cause much damage to the program in the grand scheme of things.
