Guys trip.... just happened actually. I rented a lake house which had a $150 security deposit which is kept if there is any damage to the property...

On the lake is a *obviously* old bench. I sat on it and fell right threw the backrest to the bench. Now, we are all guys 30-35 and we're obviously drinking. Looking at the damage it looks like someone tackled it. Of course it happens to me. It always does and now I'm in an awkward situation. I would ask reddit but I have til Sunday to wait for The Paddock.

We have 9 guys. A decent bench swing will run around 180$. Should we
A. Be good samaritans and replace the bench
B. Give the renter a tip of ...? 5-10$ each since the bench was about to go.
C. Let them replace the bench
D. Sue them because my elbow was hurt

None of those are the right answer honestly.

I rent a ton of Airbnbs and VRBOs.. you could probably just leave them a note. Owners of a vacation home are no different than regular home owners: they know what's old and what isn't. But, offer to pay anyways. I bet they don't take you up on it.

If you're still there, make sure the place is hella clean. It should be, regardless.. but double so because your fat *** broke their furniture.

I suspect the truth is somewhere in between "it was a rickety old bench about to fall down anyway" and "a bunch of drunks gently just sat down on it." Mention it broke and offer to pay for it.

Tell the truth. You sat on it, the bench collapsed, you hurt your elbow, but you feel bad because it looked old and hope it isn't an heirloom (last part is icing on the cake). Long pause and see what they say...

I mean I don't mind paying for it but that is just the owner getting a free bench. I swear to you it was just me. I walked away to talk to the wife. The wood is rotten from the inside

We've rented here for the last 2 years this being the 3rd.

just do what most hotel guests do and blame some random guy that just happened to join your group when the incident happened
