What year did you become a Penn State football fan?
and
Who was Penn State's greatest tight end: Ted Kwalick or Tyler Warren?

1968 from the Syracuse game onward and never looked back.
Warren best TE, Godwin best WR, Barkley best RB, Allar best QB from talent perspective, Collins best from intangibles. Mark Robinson best S, Bruce Clark best DL and Shane C best LB. I know we all love #11s these days but great players play great in big games (1st law of Madden) and Shane played the best any LB at PSU ever played in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl against the convicts.

September 30, 1972. Iowa at Penn State. Still have the program. Penn State tight ends that day were Gary Debes, Jerry Jeram, Dan Natale, John Reihner, and Bob Rickenbach. And everyone was on scholarship. :)

Born in 87 first game was 95 or 96. So probably safe to say about 90 or 91. Too many very very good TEs to quantify who was the best. Warren sure was the most exciting IMO.

I remember the Brad Scioli position change too.

First game was UCLA in 1967. Ted Kwalick was a great All-American tight end but the 1967 game emphasized the running game.

Over the years, I remember Dan Natale and Mickey Shuler and PSU threw a lot more than the late 60s. Also was blessed with a number of really talented wide receivers.

One tight end that I really remember was Irv Pankey. I prayed for the game when he would catch a pass and crush a defender (dear Lord he was big). Well he caught a pass one day and some little corner back took his legs out.
Irv moved to tackle and had a great NFL career at that position.

I've typed enough. Tyler Warren is the GOAT in my eyes with the caveat that he has a top passing quarterback.

You really can’t compare Kwalick to many of our great TEs. We rarely threw more than 15 times a game in his era. I’ll go with Warren.
Tyler Warren got one first-place vote in the 2024 Heisman Trophy balloting. Ted Kwalick, Penn State's FIRST TWO-TIME ALL-AMERICAN, received FOURTEEN FIRST-PLACE VOTES in the 1968 Heisman Trophy balloting which had Terry Hanratty, a quarterback for Notre Dame, who finished third in the Heisman balloting and O.J. Simpson, who won the balloting in a runaway with still the largest margin of victory in the Heisman Trophy balloting history. 14 writers voted for Kwalick over Hanratty and Simpson as the best player in the country and you know those weren't all Penn State newspapermen covering Penn State in 1968 over the two most glamorous positions in college football: a Notre Dame quarterback and a USC tailback.

Joe Paterno described Kwalick as "the perfect tight end" and said of Ted Kwalick, "He's what God had in mind when he made a football player."

Tyler Warren had more receptions in 2024 than the 1968 Penn State offense had completions that season.

The 1969 Orange Bowl, after the 1968 undefeated season. Penn State #3 ranked and Independent beats # 6 ranked Kansas from the Big 8 conference, 15-14 on a two point conversion by Bobby Campbell, after Kansas had too many men on the field the previous attempt. Oh and Ted Kwalick was the All American TE on that first JoePa undefeated season.
But - Tyler Warren was the better TE. Different era and far more production.

Always was a fan of Penn State and Pitt while growing up in Western Pa. (Sharon area), however, our TV stations came out of Youngstown so we were pounded with Big Ten on Saturdays and ND highlights on Sunday. First game, 86 Fiesta bowl vs Miami. Hugh fan since then.
Danced next to JoePa and SuePa at the NYE's media party.

1973.

Tyler Warren would be the best Penn State TE I’ve seen since following PSU Football. His athleticism and versatility are unmatched.
yes, we've had a great number of outstanding tes over the years, but none that possessed warren's versatility. can't recall many who had passing tds in their repertoire🤪.

They was my own first PSU game I saw. Hooked right then and there, lol. I’d be on this board right now even if I hadn’t attended Penn State.

I think it was 1970? My cousin took me to my first PSU game. PSU vs Pitt. I was maybe 11 or 12. Franco and Lydell ran wild. I remember 3 PSU students jumped the Pitt Panther and beat the hell out of him. Stole his head and ran around the track holding it up. Fans went crazy and I thought this is where I want to go to college. And I did šŸ˜Ž

Wow! I feel I wrote this response!
I watched both the '68 and '69 Orange Bowls which cemented my love of Penn State football!
I know Kwalick was the first great TE, but I also remember seeing Shuler and Brady play. I have to put Warren #1 with both Shuler and Brady tied at #2. Kwalick #3.

Became a fan in 1960 when Galen Hall was QB. Became a fanatic in 1967-70 when after the above mentioned UCLA game the team didn’t lose for the three years I was at PSU. Answer to the second question depends on meaning of ā€œgreatest,ā€ and Brady certainly is a possible answer.
