What's the deal with Earworms?

I gotta say that I am continually afflicted with Earworms (not to be confused with Earwigs, which are actual insects). I hear a song, or even a commercial jingle, on the radio, and it somehow sticks in my brain, sometimes for days on end, before it ultimately goes away. Only to be replaced within a few days by another song or commercial jingle. I wake up, and the thing starts playing in my head almost immediately. And, unfortunately, some of the Earworms that afflict me can consist of the most uninspiring and insipid music around.

Recent examples: The Eye in the Sky (Alan Parsons Project); The Eye of the Tiger (bad); Werewolves of London (fine, but it gets old after awhile); Give me a Break (KitKat bar jingle - bad); A Woman in Love by Barbra Streisand (horrible); It's a Small World (perhaps THE worst).

I try listening to other tunes which I DO like in order to make the Earworm go away. That generally doesn't work. It just goes away over time. I Googled the subject, and the article linked below suggests that I am far from being alone in having this affliction. But it bothered me slightly to read that certain personality features (such as OCD and neuroses) may dispose one to getting Earworms.

Do any of you suffer from Earworms? If so, are the songs similarly bad? And do you have a method of making them go away?

Well I might have an interesting suggestion. Why don’t you visit your dentist and have him or her fill in all your teeth with metal wether you need it or not. Then the next time the music starts in your ears then perhaps your jaw will join in and you’ll have your own personal stereophonic symphony. Think The 1812 Overture. Other than that unfortunately I’ve got nothing.

I will often wake up with a song planted firmly in my head which I had not consciously heard in years, i mean years. The other day I woke up with "I only want to be with you" from The Bay City Rollers bouncing around in my head. I can't remember hearing that song in over 3 decades

This thread made me realize that I have actually been mercifully free of earworms for quite some time.

Of course, that streak is probably jinxed now and I’ll be stuck with some inescapable tune in my head any day now.
