A question that Ben hints at but didn't ask. What is the culture and identity Franklin wants for his team at PSU? Sure, he will rattle off some values, but this year what was the offense's identity. All Franklin can point to is that he wants a spread offense, explosive plays, a balance bw passing and running, and more explosive players. But if he looks at other teams, such as UM, WI, Iowa, their identity is clear. UM wasn't always that way, but it is amazing how Gattis has adopted his play calling to what Harbaugh now wants and moved away from the spread offense to more of a ground and pound approach with lots of motion.
Franklin just seems to want more stars in recruiting, but what exactly is the system? Granted, the OCs have changed so there hasn't been consistency, but the last two years, I can't figure out what is the identify of his teams, especially on offense. He keeps saying PSU needs to compete for 365 days and it is complex, but then against MSU, they have a game plan focused on balance bw run and pass, when everyone knows MSU has problems defending the pass. Even the MSU's DL was mad at the secondary in the first half, or so said the on-field reporter. Franklin needs to figure this out and let his OC implement a game plan to win rather than being stubborn and try to run the ball all year when it is obvious they couldn't.
Let's hope that Franklin's shot makes the hole rather than ends in the water.
