Where can I take this for sandblasting?

Passed down to me from my great grandparents farm out in Springfield. Cast iron. Just needs to be sandblasted so I can repaint it and mount it for decoration in my man cave.

I've used the Google machine but not had much luck. Do any of you know of a business I could walk in to and have this done? I'm in Lexington. TIA BBN

I used to visit my great aunt out on a ridge here in SoKy. She had been me of those out in the front yard and I always wanted to ring it but she never would let me.

one day when she was busy doing something I started ringing the **** out of that bell and it wasn’t five minutes until the whole ridge was pulling up in herw driveway thinking something was wrong.

I wish I could have gotten that when she passed

Yep, this was what they used to call everyone in from the field for meals

Yeah I have a buddy who works in a small machine shop but the bell is too big to fit in to their blaster.
Yeah, probably depends on the shop.

A PC guy will have a bin big enough to do auto wheels as that's likely his bread and butter.

If you own an air compressor, you can hit Harbor freight and get a nozzle with feed tube for about $15. Media can be a bag of play sand and just use it in your yard.

Metal Cleaners in Lexington is probably your best betif you stay local. I think most places charge $80+/hr so don't be surprised if it costs more than you think it would.

I do. 8gal, 125 PSI, 1.5 HP. Does that sound like enough juice to get the job done?

Holy crap. I was wondering about price on something like this. Ultimately being a family heirloom I'll pony up if I have to but I like Reb's idea. I'll go hit Harbor Freight in Eastland and thr big box guys and see what kind of attachments I can find.

Any excuse to buy new tools right? 😃

Your compressor will work, you just can't spray continuously. Mine is a 2hp and I did a set of patio furniture in a couple of hours. Took 2 bags of sand. Make sure you have a face shield.

We had one of these in the yard when I was a kid. We’d go ride bikes all over the neighborhood, mom would ring the bell when she wanted us to come home. You could hear it for miles.

The original color I believe was black. That's what my dad said he thought it was when he was a kid. That would have been 50s out in rural Springfield. This thing was cast in the 1800s.

I am definitely going to mount it to a post. I was thinking of doing that and putting it either on my deck, or in the man cave. I am also toying with the idea of doing some sort of blue/white UK design and making it portable and bringing it down to Commonwealth to ring at tailgates when we score.

How pissed off would you guys be if you heard me blasting that bell down there every TD? šŸ¤”

Your compressor will work for the Harbor Freight sandblasting system, though you may have to take breaks for your motors sake.

You'll need more sand/media than you expect and it costs more than it should. I didnt have much luck with the playground sand, it was too inconsistent and clogged the nozzle. I did however put down plastic to capture and recycle the sand. Was probably able to save 60-70% of it each time blasting paint off bricks.

Once you have it blasted, and it's nice and clean and ready to paint, that old cast iron will take and hold paint much better if you allow it get really warm. Like sit outside on a day like today warm.

Those old bells are cool; my parent's have one put up in their back yard. It's mine when they pass. Guy brought it into our shop @ 25-30 years ago. It had a big crack in it, and a chunk missing about the size of a dollar. We fixed it and the guy never did come back and pick it up, and no idea who he was.

Hell yes, thanks for the advice guys.

Where would the best place to do this be? Outside? I've got a deck, I've got a concrete slab and I've got plenty of yard. I'm assuming that'll be messy with the sand flying out in the open.

This will in fact be my first rodeo šŸ˜†
