Any suggestions for online ordering?

Or where the hell else you’d buy one from a hardware store?

Haven’t a clue where my dad got his stone back in the 50’s to keep mom’s paring knife good and sharp. (No double entendre!!)

Both the stone and the knife diminished in size over the years. (No double entendre!!) And still the knife was sharper than even the nice easy sharpeners do for our full tang wooden handle Chicago cutlery guys and gals.

Got a King whetstone for Christmas. They have a bunch on Amazon. Got 1000/3000 grit iirc.

Got a ?blue monkey? sharpening stone a couple years ago. I think it is 600/1000.
Does an OK job, but I'm probably not patient enough with it.

If you have a rockler or woodcraft or a fine woodworking store, they will have whetstones there. I use both a diamond plate (Trend-300/1000 combo) and a King 6000 grit waterstone for mostly just chisels and plane blades, but occasionally knives, however, I find sharpening knives on a whetstone to be quite challenging to say the least.

I have some very expensive Japanese knives so I have the following:

Atoma Diamond 140 coarse flattening stone, (For flattening and fixing any knives with chips)

Suehiro Cerax 320 grit, (For very dull knives and reprofiling)

Suehiro Cerax 1000 grit, (For touching up a dull knife)

Suehiro Rika 5000 (For fine sharpening on slightly dull knife)

and a Kiyayama 8000 grit finishing stone. (Polishing)

Sharpening your own knives is very satisfying and therapeutic.

Save some money. Glue or double stick tape a piece of emory cloth to an old fashioned paint stir stick. Most people would have better luck finishing a knife edge with that than a stone. There's a reason barbers sharpened their razors with straps instead of a stone.

Just get a slap chop by Vince. He says you'll like his nuts.

I've bought my stones years ago at hardware store and have seen them at cabelas years ago...not sure if they still stock them.

I definitely prefer stone over those steel round sharpners that sometimes come with knife sets

That is a finishing step. Leather strop will not sharpen a full blade.

Depends on how often you maintain it. Use an emory board paint frequently and you'll rarely if ever need a stone unless you're hitting bone or some other non-cutting board hard surface.

These are a lot faster. You can get sharpening stones at places like Cabela's if you want.
