Who at WR is going to surprise people this year?

Tinsley or Meiga? Does Parker take a big step up? Does Lambert Smith really take off? I think Meiga is going to surprise people.

I think Washington and Tinsley can replicate Dotson and Washington from a year ago. The big tell will be if KLS and or Meiga can be consistent threats. We won't have the snap counts to give them the proper targets unless the running game improves.

If either of those 2 struggle, I think Wallace and Saunders are likely next up. It's been a quiet fall from Saunders in particular. It would be awesome to sneak him in for a deep ball, but he went from a guy most assumed would play to a guy who might just see time in 4 games. No idea, but he's not been mentioned lately.

Of course, he could be #2 on the Purdue depth chart in the slot and shock us all.

Good point on Saunders not really getting any hype at all over the Summer and into Fall practice. Wonder if he has really made the progress in the S&C program to be ready for B10 football, although he is listed at 178 on the current PSU roster. I'm looking for Saunders to redshirt this season unless there are significant injuries to the starting WR's. With Meiga and Wallace seemingly ready for every game roles in the offense and Dottin and Clifford also competing to get on the field it will take one of the freshmen being just too good to sit for any to burn their redshirts, i.e. play more than the allowed 4 games. And it's hard for me to believe that any of the true freshmen are more ready to play or that much faster, or that much more consistent catching the ball, than the 3 starters or the group of WR's that seem to be ahead of them to begin Fall camp, Meiga, Wallace, Dottin and possibly Clifford for the staff to burn a redshirt unless their are very significant injuries. But having 4 talented true freshmen WR's getting acclimated, developing and trying to get on the field is a very good thing for PSU football going forward.

Hayden Rucci, who if Penn State had bothered to recruit, then his brother would be a 4-year fixture on the OL.

in todays "transfer portal" world, if the Rucci's wanted to play together and wanted to play at Penn State, it could have happened even if we didn't recruit him out of high school.
While true, why not stick with a sure division winner in Wiscy? Almost annual guarantee to play for the B1G title every year.

I am not saying they should have played here. My point was that not recruiting his brother isn't what kept him from coming to Penn State. They seem to be happy where they are.

I will say Saunders. The big 3 are set so none of them will be a surprise. I hope Meiga surprises me but my expectations are low. I look at him in comparison to Washington and Lambert-Smith as they all came to PSU in the same class. Washington has caught around 90 passes, KLS around 50, Malik around 3. I would then group Saunders and Harrison together and Saunders was a much more highly regarded player coming out of HS (not that stars are the end all). So IMO he is the most likely to make an impact.

For context, Brenton Strange was the TE in that Penn State class...take that for what it's worth and advocate for one over the other, but there was 1 TE in that class and there is no reason to believe that the team would have taken 2... 🤷‍♂️

If he really wanted to be here, young Rucci could have walked on (dad could afford it) and earned one later I'm sure.

I don't think they were in the cards. It is what it is.

No offense but this is a stupid post. You have 85 scholarships and you recruit kids who you think can play. So what happens if you give a scholarship to Hayden to increase your chances to get Nolan and Nolan becomes enamored with Alabama, Clemson, etc.? I am a Warwick grad and former player and NO ONE wanted to see Nolan go to PSU more than me.

Andre and Aaron Collins come to mind. Matt and Chris Bahr? Just a terrible idea!

I think his point was that each player should be evaluated individually, not collectively as a family. If BOTH are deemed worthy of using a scholarship (which would apply to the Collins brothers) then great...if not and you take the risk on a marginal player as a recruiting tactic, there is no guarantee you get the elite sibling anyway.

Further, using your Andre and Aaron Collins example, even if both weren't of that level (which they were), the scholarship limit was much higher when they played (and even higher when the Bahrs played) so teams could theoretically use some of the extra scholarships for such things as offering lower-tier prospects to court higher-rated family members if they so chose.

So unless someone is attempting to make the case that Hayden Rucci is on the level of one of the Collins brothers, not sure exactly what is objectionable about Bvillebaron's general point. 🤷‍♂️

I saw 3 practices in the spring. He looked good. He ran over, and I mean totally trucked, one of our potential starting DBs on one pass reception during a scrimbo. I saw him play in HS at St X. I will stick with my prediction.

Have you seen any this fall? If so, love to hear your observations.

No thanks. Franklin was right on this. Hayden has no catching ability or athleticism to play TE at PSU. Three years later, he remains third option at UW and strictly a blocking TE. I could see them both try to transfer as grads to make amends with PSU community but at this point, who needs them.

Andre and Aaron Collins both started at Penn State. Which one was taken in just to get the other? Both Bahr’s were longtime NFL kickers. Which one was the mercy scholarship to lure the other?
Wasn’t there a 3rd brother, Jason? And maybe even a 4th. 🤔

If I remember correctly (admit, a risky venture) the Bahr brothers were soccer stars whose father was the Penn State soccer coach.

As to the Collins brothers, Andre came first, several years ahead of Aaron, I think. Doubtful Joe offered Andre in order to get Aaron.

Yeah, Walter Bahr moved from Temple to PSU as head coach in 1974, Matt’s freshman year, Chris’ senior year.

There was a running back transfer brother from Colorado State (I think). Can’t think k of his name right now. I think 4 of the 17 siblings played for Joe.

Didn’t see your reply when I made mine but we are definitely thinking same brother and schools.

I think this is a good pick. He had some solid offers - TN, UM, MSU. Broke HS records and came to play with his brother. Washington, Smith, Tinsley are main eaters but Liam looks like a sneaky route runner who can slip by coverage. He might be in some third and long packages. Meiga has some raw talent but I think plays mostly if CV plays.
