NO doubt Pete Nance is a talented unusual ball player. but is he Mitch Trubisky in the fact that we are using his skills incorrectly?
...But I think more important is that Nance is successful with mismatches...He can score against the #5 but is usually overpowered by B10 centers....He can hit the 3 against the #5...If he gets a mismatch inside he is really successful.....To me the NU offense should totally be devoted to creating those mismatches for Pete....either inside or out....Buie driving the middle is random at best(he is not McINtosh),,,Audige taking over is hot and cold. I think Pete is your best offensive weapon and you have to highlite it...everytime down court he has to get a chance to score...I think this best happens with another center Young or Nicholson on the floor. Like Nagy with Trubisky just does not seem to be maximizing his talents..
Defensively. Nance is a great shot blocker......he needs to be around the rim,,,but that means the other guy Young or Nicholson is gaurding on the floor which they probably cant do....NU gets out physicaled a lot so it would help to have Nance and a center on the floor but would probably have to be a zone....Also this NU team needs to get the most every game by figuring out where they can create the best match ups...defensively and offensively....like the Bears,,,its not the scheme silly...its maximizing the strengths of your players.

I like the Trubisky comp, but for another reason. I think he was very overrated by the staff. And not simply coming out of high school. The staff has had a few years to adjust its thinking and really never does ... like Trubisky

I think they have continued to think they can build around him, rather than considering him another piece of a complex puzzle. He's not dominant at any part of the game.

To your point, maybe he would be at the four or the three.

On the right day, I MIGHT agree that he's your best offensive weapon. The only reason I agree with that is because it's a pretty weak group. He's often better than Buie. And the two of them are almost always better than the revolving third flavor/player of the night.

On defense, he's the main reason any dominating center concerns me. but I'm not sure I would be confident about him against strong 4s either.

Yes, he should be at the four. He's so soft he might be a good three. Yes, he needs to touch the ball more. Yes, he should demand the ball more. But in the end, what's it going to get you?

He's scoring 16/6 in the conference. Do you see him as a 23/10 guy? I don't. I just don't see him as that kind of dominating presence.

To get back to your Bears QB comparison, I'm thinking Cutler. Nice potential at first glance. Nice talent, but just something missing. Yes, part of it was coaching, but we/the staff expected too much compared to what was really there.

There are a few logical things we can do, but Collins has been very stubborn in his approach.
I know it is dangerous to start a sentence this way, but "If I were coaching" I would definitely try Young, Nance and Beran at the same time. In a game. Practice is not a game. If Beran is anything close to what the coaches seem to think about his defensive skills, he can guard small forwards and easily score over them. I would try that trio in a game asap. (We didnt't play them together at all last year because Collins wanted Kopp out there all the time. We did play them together two years ago when they were all pretty green).

Nicholson has proven he is competent at the very least and has significant upside. He is a physical force unlike anyone else on our roster. Lots of doubters lurking around here, but they are just wrong about Nicholson. If I were the coach, I would get him some regular minutes with Nance. IN GAMES, not practice. Practice is not a game. They did play together for two minutes against Purdue and it went well. Hopefully somebody on the coaching staff watches the game film.

I think the advantages of Ryan Young at the 5 and Pete Nance at the 4 are incredibly obvious, but I have said that over and over for 10 months, so there's no need to elaborate. That should be our frontcourt for a least 20 minutes a game.

Your main point is really that we need to create mismatches. Nance provides that because he is a damned skilled scorer for a tall, somewhat slender power forward. He can literally score from anywhere - he is Chris Collins' ideal basketball player. Beran is a lesser version of Nance. He is not a good rebounder or finisher and does not create mismatches that favor us. You could argue that he really doesn't want the ball unless he is unguarded at the 3 point line. Beran is more agile than Nance and probably a better ball-handler, but thats about it. Young can score against against anybody who isn't 7 feet tall, but against certain really big guys he is just not going to score effectively as the focus of the offense. He does play smart, can handle the non-monsters physically. In most situations he can at least pick up garbage points, rebound and defend the post. Thats why he should play instead of Beran.

These pairings play to our advantage...
Nance with Young. Nance with Nicholson. Buie with Greer.
