Who is the last UK QB who threw the deep ball as well as Johnson?

Couch didn't really get to show the long ball very often. With Sanford and Yeast here, all he had to do was throw screen passes and they could take it to the house. He was very accurate with the short and mid range passes though.

Haven't had a bomb thrower in a while.

Hopefully something will click and all the big, tall, athletic wrs we have will be unleashed next year.

A deep threat capability in addition to a top ground attack would be fun. This O has the personnel and talent for fire works show.

You mostly just see the highlights after players are gone, I think Woodson overthrew a lot of deep passes and Couch didn't get the chance to try many. All I know is the deep ones Johnson has missed have been few and far between, and most have dropped right in the receivers lap.

And yes, Norton threw a beautiful deep pass. Always stood in there, I got irritated as hell at some of his critics.

Best deep ball QBs at Kentucky :
1. Lorenzen
2. Woodson
3. SJ
4. Couch
Not really even close with JLO...he was a helluva a QB but his deep balls were often overthrown with his powerful arm quite a bit.

I'd put Woodson as 1 and Johnson as 1a...Outisde of the one in UL game and a few bad ones in Vandy game when he had a bad wrist...Stephen puts enough air on those balls and WR typically run in stride to catch them...they are a thing of beauty and he gives the WR a chance vs. throwing them too deep and nobody has a chance at them.

Couch was really not exceptional at all on deep balls compared to Woodson and Johnson.

Lorenzen had such a strong arm and wild technique that sometimes the ball arrived at the WR downfield tumbling end-over-end.

Lorenzen could throw it long but not as accurate as Johnson. Actually, Newton could throw it long well. But not when we needed it.

Woodson threw a beautiful deep ball but I don't think he was as accurate as Johnson. Probably have to go back to Lorenzen. He and Aaron Boone were a great combination on the deep throws.

Man if Johnson can make the short over the middle throws a strong suit then this guy could be a superstar next year.

I'm calling it now, Florida goes down in commonwealth next year.**

** hopefully the notre dame QB doesn't transfer. Grad transfers really are BS and need to be banned immediately

I think Johnsons shorter throws looked a bit better against UL. I think hes slowly improving at it. Once he gets it down, Johnson will be tough for defenses to stop.

One thing that helped as the season went along, in addition to his improvement, was teams had to commit more and more defenders to the run. Opened alot of windows for the passing game. Otherwise, all those deep balls would be into 2 deep coverage. Not as effective.

Ole Smitty Smitterson throws a nice deep ball.
As a passer, Steve Johnson is a work in progress. The Louisville game was by far his best passing performance. We have had a lot of good quarterbacks. Couch, Lorenzen, Woodson were stronger, more accurate, more effective than Johnson. But I will say this for Johnson. He has guts, and he keeps getting better. Another offseason with Coach Hinshaw ought to take him to another level.

Exactly. Our strong running game is the key to our offense. Johnson has been reading the safeties and throwing deep when a fast receiver draws single coverage with the middle of the field open.

Oh no doubt about it. When a QB has backs like Snell and Boom, it certainly helps.

Max Smith. Johnson does not throw that well, he hasn't thrown that well all year save NMSU AND UOL. I believe he will improve from here but I find it hilarious some posters think him all world off one game.

Max Smith? Lmao, you aren't serious right? I liked Max but he absolutely did not have the same deep ball accuracy that Johnson does.

And nobody is saying hes all world, thats just making stuff up. Hes had more than 2 good games by the way. Have you even watched Johnson play this year? Judging by your comments, it sounds like you haven't.

It's been awesome to watch his progress.

His stats against USC, Bama, Vandy and UGA were poor. I will not only admit that...I was extremely frustrated with him at times.

But anyone who has watched him closely has seen how much he's improved. Toughness, ball security, decision-making, accuracy...and of course the coaching staff has gained confidence in him and allowed him to try more, as well.

When Johnson got the start, it seemed he just worked on running the offense. While the deep balls are great, I admire the kid for the way he kept the offense running smoothly thru the year. It never seemed he played like it was about him. He is a guy who knows how to win in team sports.

In answer to the OP Woodson.

Amazing the reversal of attitudes about the capabilities of Johnson. He caught a lot of blame early on , but in his defense for whatever reason he was being handcuffed at times. Even against UGA the down field shots where limited. The long ball is his strength and as the announcers alluded to Gran said the playbook was going to be opened against UofL and I think that really helped Johnson. Took away the predictability of the offense.

As I recall, Couch didn't throw what you'd consider "bombs" that often. When I think of bombs, I see long, high arching passes. I recall Couch throwing deep balls but they were often lasers. Can still see Lance Mickelson going deep over the middle and being hit in stride about 35-40 yards down field.
Anyone that thinks Couch wasn't great, because of his NFL struggles, didn't see him play much.
Lorenzen and Woodson could throw deep balls well but it seems they both laid the ball up and let the receiver run under. Both were great qb's and provided a lot of enjoyment.

Nahhhh. I know what I mean to say on this thingy dohicky type contraption.

Max Smith deep ball was decent. Stephen Johnson's deep ball is.....decent. he routinely under throws his man. occasionally, he lays it in the bread basket. His short game he throws way to high, he under throws his deep ball. I love my team, I just refuse to wear blue tinted glasses. Johnson had an excellent game against the cards and I believe he will be our guy next year. A funny thing about our board, they ask you a question and when you give an answer you get trolled. well, don't ask then because you might not like the Answer.
