Chase had considered it but is staying. I imagine it was a close call, but if pro ball is his dream, he just needs to focus on self improvement. The battle is with himself. He has the tools. The minutes will be there eventually. Use the opportunity to play against future pros every day. Things will most definitely work out. I'm glad he is looking past the instant gratification.

Vrank should redshirt but he doesn't want to and I think that will ultimately lead to his transfer. If Chase didn't leave this season, I don't think he ever will.

I wonder if Obi takes medical RS, Javin and Jack take a RS, and hopefully Vrank does the same...

I honestly don't see anyone on this team redshirting. Maybe White, but I don't see it.

javin def not imo...maybe jack and vrank, but if vrank is opposed as stated then fine, he should set himself up for more minutes his jr/sr year.....amile returning is great for the overall team , but hurts chase/vrank/javin for next season to some degree

Jack seems to be a natural backup to Tatum, meaning he's more of a wing than Javin or Matt, despite not being as talented overall. Vrank will not see any meaningful time this year, so he should do what he wants in that regard. Javin is a tough call. If he can play along side Amile and Harry, then RS Jack and let Javin get those 6 minutes in a 3 forward lineup.

So. Many. Weapons.

Who's excited?

I know I am.

And I know what you're saying about Jack, but I really just don't see him backing anyone up this year. He has a nice skill base, but the skill set isn't there yet if that makes sense.

If he becomes a direct backup to Jayson or anyone else, it will be the surprise of surprises. Like the Ukranian kid, Mykhailiuk at Kansas.

Yeah odds are we won't see Jack this year, but it would be really fun if we were wrong. He seems like the kind of player that worked so well against us when we were led by Jabari and Hood. Mercer had 2-3 such hard nosed players with just enough length to piss us off. I want him to become our enforcer and hustle guy. We will likely have to wait a while to see it.

White seems like the most likely candidate to redshirt. Vrank won't see any meaningful minutes, but if he's against redshirting, what can ya do? I can't imagine Javin would RS, as he is a top 40 recruit. Not sure he'll crack the rotation come ACC season, but I suspect he'll get at least more minutes than Murphy or Ojeleye did as freshman.

I am extremely excited, glad my Cubbie's are playing some ball or it would seem to drag on forever. I would compare my excitement similiar to 2014 class.

But if Vrankovic transfers, he'll have to redshirt as a transfer.

I confess I don't really have a read on him. I think his Duke ceiling is Matt Christensen or Clay Buckley.

Is that enough for him?

It all depends on how we recruit big men in the coming years. If we whiff one year, he might be playing quite a bit.

I hope chase don't ever leave kids gunna be awesome

I agree with ya Pis, Chase has yet to show his best. I really never gave it a thought that he would transfer, just too good of an attitude. Hope someone played a lot of pitch and catch with him this summer! If he ever learns to let the game come to him, and catch the ball first, look out!
Go Duke!!

Like most talented kids, he'd rather play than not and if sitting out a year means the promise of playing, he'd do it. I know someone close to Tony, so this is of course third hand information, but things and ideas can change.

As a player, I feel his ceiling is more Zoubek with some offense than Christensen. He could be a little more like Harrelson was for Kentucky his senior year.

If Vrank's ceiling is more like Zoubek with some offense, that would be great.

Here's the thing I don't get. If you are going to consider Duke in the first place and are interested in really working as a student, and you most likely don't have NBA potential, why wouldn't you automatically redshirt if you are not likely to get minutes that first year. If you stay, you get a degree from Duke and maybe even a grad degree from Duke. If you don't have a scholarship offer from Duke that 5th year, you transfer to another school for your 5th year and still get a grad degree for free. If you aren't going to make the NBA, how could it get better. If you develop better than expected, you get minutes at Duke. If not, you can still transfer and play meaningful minutes somewhere else. If you get your degree first, you don't even have to sit out.

That's the beauty in the 5th year transfer...it benefits players greatly to redshirt, improve, contribute, and then become a college 'free agent'. It has worked for many, namely Tariq Black Kansas/Memphis.

Why didn't Vrank redshirt last year? Didn't he play in less games than Amile? Was it that he played in a game past a cut off point in the season?

With all the talk about the system favoring the schools/NCAA and not the kids, a more liberal redshirt set of rules would really be in the best interest of the student athletes. Give borderline kids one more year to develop and role players/carreeer end of the bench kind of guys a chance for one more year of school which they could parlay into a double/triple major or a grad degree.

If Chase didn't leave this season, I don't think he ever will.

With Chase, I would not be surprised to see a pre-Christmas transfer if he's not getting substantial minutes and/or for him to reevaluate his options if he's not clearly in line to start as a Jr. -- e.g., if we get commitments from both Bamba and Carter. I think Chase is going to become a very good player, so I hope it sticks it out. It may take a year or two, but I think he's got the ability to be a major focal point of the team as a jr. or sr. It does also help that Chase is actually quite young for his class year, and thus may be a bit more patient than some other guys. It really is pretty stunning, but Chase is actually 5 months younger Josh Jackson, 6 months younger than Thon Maker, 2 months younger than Bam Adebayo, only 1 month older than Lonzo Ball, and only 2 months older than Jonathan Isaac. In other words, in the elite basketball world, Jeter's age actually puts him more in line with the 2017 class than it does with the 2016 he belongs. Hopefully, that will make him more willing to stay 3-4 years -- which is clearly what it would take to get to the NBA from Duke in view of the roster we have next year.

Based on what went down post-season, I don't see Chase leaving at this point. He would start over Bamba, but maybe not Carter. And that all depends on Bolden's post season status. I hear you, but he won't be chased away at this point.
