Why can't the Brawl be played annually?

Plenty of teams from different conferences have annual rivalry games. Georgia vs Georgia Tech, South Carolina vs Clemson, Florida State vs Florida, Army vs Navy, Louisville vs Kentucky just to name a few. Seems like any excuse I hear as to why WVU and Pitt are not playing is a load of BS from either side. Seriously why can't this happen?

Both sides of the fanbase need to get together on this and do whatever we can to get this game back on our schedule. There is absolutely zero downside to play this game for WVU or Pitt.

I think Pitt looks at WVU like WVU looks at Mu. This is based on my experience knowing Pitt grads. Especially now that they are in the ACC.

You haven't talked with me. This grad thinks the opposite. It's a disgrace that the Pitt/WVU, Pitt/PSU and the WVU/PSU games are not played every year. 2 of those 3 games should be played every year and rotated for scheduling purposes.

If the Big 12 can let go of this 'round robin' one true champion line, admit two members and go to eight conference games it would be a lot more feasible. The two new members do NOT have to be current top twenty teams. Just teams that are better than their brethren in CUSA or AAC that meet the conference criteria.

one problem, all of those are INSTATE rivalries. WVU and Pitt are not.

It doesn't matter in the slightest that the Backyard Brawl is not in-state. It's one of the oldest, 100 plus year tradition rich rivalries in sports. It's shameful that the Brawl is not ongoing. Ditto for WVU-VPI.

Ohio State-Michigan is not INSTATE.

Georgia-Florida is not INSTATE.

Alabama-LSU is not INSTATE.

On the one hand it would be great to play to play home and home every other two years with Pitt and VT. On the other hand ..... I wouldn't care if Pitt never came back to the schedule.

Folks. Times change, and so do so called "rivalries".

WVU and PSU was really NEVER a rivalry. If so then so was WVU & Temple. And I believe it's been 23 years since the schools played & no longer really counting.

As for the backyard brawl, it was a sellout in Motown on occasion but rarely EVER at Heinz. I only remember a sellout there in 2002, but that's the only one I remember.

Pitt went to the ACC. Good for them. Play basketball in the tobacco road controlled conferencw.

WVU is in the Big XII. I have never been happier with our schedule and my ticket value.

As for OOC, I'd rather play Maryland. Better game, no ferry ride necessary, and more fun with less drama. I'd rather get a long ter deal with VPI now that Beamer and Weaver are out too for the same reason.

Oklahoma and Nebraska moved on.
Texas & A&M moved on.
Colorado & Nebraska moved on.
Missouri & Kansas moved on.

Things change. Everyone moves on.

I'm happy the band has no plans to put itself back together so to speak.

Why won't it happen? Money. Why would it happen? Money. This seems to be just about the only thing driving any decision having to do with sports. Tradition, rivalries, cooperation, partnership, mutual interest, or fan-interest are not as important as money.

TOSU v Michigan

Simple they don't want to play us. They only agreed to a game when PSU told them to pound salt after there 4 game stint they signed. Pitt wanted a long term deal with PSU. PSU>Pitt>WVU.

3XBoy..................I am speaking about WV fans when I say 'best game going'. Sellouts are pretty much a thing of the past. ESPN made sure of that. Tune in to ESPN and watch the WV/Texas Tech game today. You won't have to brave the distance or weather. Just got the cable bill to pay. It's all good.

exactly. Why mountaineer fans continue to bang on this is hard to understand. Pitt acts elite when dealing with wvu, but their results on the field and court prove otherwise on the national level. They think they are better than wvu but the results don't back it up. Move on, wvu plays much better teams in conference and should continue playing Md and try to schedule an sec team with the new ad. Add Rutgers to the schedule before Pitt at least Rutgers fans understand and appreciate the wvu series.

I would love to have a rotation of Pitt, MD, Va Tech where they are in Morgantown in the years we have 5 B12 away games and a short away trip in the years we have 5 B12 at home.

I wish both AD's would have locked this game down for 50 years, along with a contract from ESPN to play the game during rivalry week like it should be.

Living in the Pittsburgh area for most of my life, I can say seldom if ever have I ran into a Pitt fan ( and if I did I can't remember ) who thought they were better than WVU . Where this comes from I have no idea ( unless you're talking about from behind a computer screen ). I would bet $$ that a yearly game against Pitt ( home or away ) would outdraw several of our home conference games rather consistently every year. Pit doesn't need WVU and WVU doesn't need Pit, but for many it beats the hell out Iowa St. & Texas Tech on a yearly basis.

Playing Pitt each season would be fun... ...but whatever....

We're not an east coast team anymore so what does it matter..?

Pitt played YSU, Akron and Iowa out of conference this year and WVU is a better option than both the first two. In fact, if I were making the schedule I would consider swapping out Iowa because the BYB is a fun game.

Most P5 conferences play 9 conference games regardless of the number of teams, SEC being the exception. Teams still have 3 OOC games to schedule so other "rivalry" games can have a spot.

For my money I'd rather see VT and Maryland occupy two of those spots on our schedule with the third game open for new blood. I'd like to see Kentucky, UNC, UVA, Rutgers in that slot rather than pitt or PSU. Not really interested in either of them.

Depends upon which "WV fans" you ask. Talk to WV fans in the eastern panhandle, they say WVU vs Maryland is best game goin. Talk to WV fans in southern WV, they say WVU vs VPI is best game goin.

The backyard brawl is generational in its importance (ie the older generation) or just important to the nostalgia north central WV fan. Most WVians really don't care about pitt anymore since they've not been nationally relevant since Marino (32 seasons back). I went to games at Pitt stadium, 3 Rivers, and Heinz, but at the end of it, it was getting old and too much of a hassle. Don't need it anymore.

Btw calling me boy is like calling Lassie a puppy dog or Moby Dick a minnow.

Oh and sellouts are not a thing of the past when the economy in WV is not missing near 20k coal mining jobs like over the last 7 years.

If you call WVU/PSU a rivalry....

Then you must admit that Marshall/WVU is a rivalry....

And by that I mean neither are

I don't think anyone even at PSU would think renewing the series would be as one-sided as it was then. Hell, we used to cream VT on a yearly basis until the late 90's. Then things changed. Same deal here.

PSU back then recruited with the best teams in the country. Now PSU's recruiting numbers look a lot more like ours. Once we played a few games, the "eveness" of the two programs would be pretty obvious.

Not offended.

WV has lost at least 15k but I'd say it is closer to 20k coal mining jobs since 09. The county I grew up in (Boone) had lost 2500 coal jobs as of the end of 2014. Btw Boone county was annually voted as one of the top WVU Alumni Chapters, probably not any more. My point was It's really effecting the economy including football attendances. Heck Massey then Alfa as well as Eastern used to along with the UMWA all donate to WVU athletics and had signs with recognition of such shown during the games. I never got why the UMWA donated.

we didn't "cream vt until the late 90's". They owned us the entire 90's decade after 1993. And penn state is still top 10 recruiting, not like ours. Although I do agree, we could routinely hang with them now on the field.

Pretty sure Pitt has made it clear that they have no interest in an annual game. Eventually once the bad blood dies, I'd expect them to rotate us and Penn State, and maybe ND depending on NDs ACC schedule.

I miss the game. And it would be great to have a regional rival that's an easy trip for fans.

But if the tradeoff is getting Oklahoma, Texas, TCU, Baylor, and Oklahoma State on the schedule, I'm perfectly fine with never playing them again. I LOVE playing the teams we play now in conference. Maryland will do just fine as OOC game close to home.
