Why does Marcus Lee see so few minutes

I mean he seems to be a bit of an offensive liability yes, but really in the last few games ALL of the bigs have been lame on offense. And he plays pretty decent defense. Does anyone have a full explanation as to why this is?

I agree, he has the potential to be a scorer, around the basket.

Wasn't he recruited in high school to play volleyball?

in close games he is not as good as WCS dakari or Towns . In all the other games this season ( 12 of 15 ) he has played as much as anyone so this is not really a valid post.

Not playing physical enough down low, not going hard for boards, not switching properly on defense....at least this is what I've seen the last two games when cal has taken him out.

He is horrible on offense and UK already struggles there. He can't dribble, shoot a jumper or hit free throws. What else?

^^this. Lee brings some energy and some hops but that's about it.

It's his defense . He gets schooled way too often for a guy with his strength and athleticism.

Not to pile on the guy, but I think it's more about lack of concentration/missed assignments than anything. I would argue that he is being yanked for specific mistakes on the defensive end, rather than his offensive shortcomings.

OP answered his own question. He said he plays "decent" d, and is an offensive liability...that is why he does not play in closer games.

Agreed. A few times last game he went for blocks when he should have been blocking out (trying to come from the far side of basket) and left some open offensive boards for A&M. He's also been beaten a few times the last few games because he took bad angles or was simply too slow. He's better than he's been lately so hopefully he turns it back on. Can be a big boost when he's playing well.

He needs to learn to stay in front of his man instead of letting them go by and trying to block them off the backboard.

I actually think Lee is exactly what this team needs. We mis Poy's rebounding and Lee is great at that.

I could be wrong of course, but this post seems like someone trolling. Low post count and stirring the pot.

The last 2 or 3 games the defenders have been beating the ship out of WCS, DJ and KT. What do you think they would do to Lee? It's not talent exactly. Maybe he's not thick enough.

I don't think you are wrong, anyone that knows enough to find their way to a basketball message board knows the answer to this question before they ask.

Lost at times badly on "D" and has little or no jump shot/ability to create a shot. Finishing games? No--cannot hit a FT. Great energy, great rebounding this year, decent passer.

Uh, well he looked pretty good against Michigan in the Elite 8 last year. I'd call that a close game. I'd go far as to say he was the difference maker, even more so than Aaron Harrison.

He hasn't been given a shot this year, IMO, to see whether he can truly hang. But that is coach's call, not any of ours

The HS girls coach here in Canyon, TX (over 1100 wins with 90% winning pct.) has a meeting with all players parents at the beginning of the year. He tells them "Don't call me and ask why your daughter isn't playing more. It's because she's not good enough"

Towns shoots 73%, WCS and Johnson at 59%...Lee is at like 26% from the FT line. Those 3 also do all the things you listed better than Lee significantly, and while that is not saying much, it says all you need to know.

Just struggling a little right now. I think he will be fine. Who knows what could be bothering him. Maybe a family issue, girl problems, etc. Could just be a little bit of a slump.

Would love to see him break out of it tomorrow night.

This is the thing though, I dont think Marcus is a downgrade defensively, hes mobile and pretty active, although he does miss assignments. But I think thats where in game experience would help him. We could really use what he could potentially give IMO

You aren't wrong for it either.
Look back at the Kansas game and the way in which we played. Above the rim, swating balls like volleyball. Marcus was huge in the Kansas game and brings a ton of energy. Runs the floor great and rebounds pretty darn well too.
Now fast forward a couple months later and look at what we're missing from that team? Alex poythress. Marcus is the closest thing to Alex we have on this team, and in game experience is the only thing that will help him.
Other than wcs we have nobody left that plays above the rim, and this is one area we've changed.
The style of D we played in the Kansas game was this team at its full potential and we look nothing like it without Lee or poythress.

You guys nailed it. Primary issue is his defense. He's still developing a feel for things. I'm sure he'll be fine long term, but he's got some things to work on. While he can be good shot blocker, he's also the most likely to foul a guy when attempting a block. This is usually because he's a little out of position or slow in recognizing the play and then has to close out on a shooter too aggressively to compensate for that.

Few bigs can create on their own. Lyles and Towns can. Lee is on the complete opposite end of that spectrum. He is scary when he has the ball. You know that if Lee has the ball for more than a couple seconds everyone is screaming "give it up!"

I've been saying the same thing about Johnson when he gets the ball. Here lately if he gets it in the post, it's a turnover. I think all of our big men will bounce back but Lee couldn't have done any worse than the other guys the last 2 games. Mid season slump, they'll get it back.

He is a highly talented athlete, but he is an average basketball player. He will have to learn the game and he will get more time in the next couple of years. He is just not ready right now.

LMAO at the coaches on this board who make him out to be a horrible project that should be left out in the desert. SMH.

Lee is a freak athlete and would be earning major minutes at most other D1 schools. He does a lot of great things on the floor, and yes, still has plenty of room to develop further.

We are lucky to have him, and I feel great about his future.

I'm a big fan of Lee and dont see why when WCS and the rest of the bigs are getting their collective arses handed to them that Lee doesnt get a larger chance to make an impact , at least bring some energy and more speed ( compared to lyles and KAT ) . He's came up HUGE in two big games at least -- mich and kansas . If you look at his stats in min played VS WCS there isnt much difference at all . Speaking of stats kinda hard to believe but KAT is averaging 2.3 blocks a game and Willie is at 1.9 . Been a while since willie has had a big game with lots of blocks . Whole team obviously needs a boost in emotion and confidence.
