leaving practice today, I realized that if Adam Carlson makes a 30-something yarder against Auburn and a 30-something yarder against Kentucky, we're 6-6 and in the Indy Bowl and Croom is back and this is what I'm missing:
-watching football practice
-watching a real offense at football practice
-a contemporary offensive philosophy and someone coaching QBs who knows what the hell is going on
-a coach excited about a spring game
-sixpack breaking the new uniform pics 5 days early
-any enthusiasm and hope at all

So, to Adam Carlson, I offer all my sincerest apologies for everything I have hurled at you before, and I leave you with: thank you.

With our schedule last year, a feces throwing monkey could have coached us to a bowl game. And he almost did.

And he beat Ole Miss in the 07 Egg Bowl. There's something to be said for that to. He made and missed the ones that counted- for the better.

Adam was a better kicker in high school than at MSU. I'm sure it was the coaching he recieved. Ironically, I had lunch with his uncle yesterday and he told me Adam had accepted a job with Bancorp South and was doing well. He also said that Adam told him that it was like night and day with Mullen's staff and the one we had and most of the players loved the excitement and also knew they had to work their butts off to succeed.

...to hold myself back from calling Croom the biggest dumbshit who ever lived, I can't - but I shouldn't. I can't really blame Croom, because he was set up for failure from the beginning. Larry Templeton hired him, even after Croom supposedly told him to go F himself. Templeton gave him all the time in the world, supported him even after he did all sorts of stupid ****, and applied zero pressure for him to succeed. So really, anything that has to do with the football program over the last 5 years - be it Carlson, Henig, the bullets that flew at the Budweiser car, whatever - can ultimately be traced back to Larry Templeton. That's why my signature has been what it is since Croom "retired."

I keep going back to the things LT said when he described fining Croom. LT came back from Green Bay saying "the search is over - I have found who I want to represent our university". He kept talking about character and representing the school - things that are important, but far from sufficient to make a football coach.

If you can find LT's interviews about the Croom hiring, he'll see its no wonder he failed.

But I doubt very seriously anybody coached him up either. we have had kids who never got any better because we didn't know how to coach them up. That was my point.

Let me see if I understand this. A football player misses kicks because of bad coaching. A basketball player misses shots, the kid can't shoot. Has nothing to do with coaching. Got it.
