Why is there still a National Letter of Intent?

These used to be about the most binding agreements a person could sign. They were viewed as airtight with next to no exceptions. But they are meaningless now, right? Why do they even still exist? Or have they been done away and I just missed the memo.

We made the shift in the acronym from NLI to NIL. Education with all the trimmings to CASH.
The former is now irrelevant.
