I would guess the international aspect and limited playing experience. Grew up in Nigeria and played 3 games for the NFL academy program in England.

I know him a little bit. I don't know about lifelong die-hard Vols fan. He's a South Carolina boy, having once had a summer job where I worked near Rock Hill. He was married to the daughter of a friend of mine who worked at the same place - a bigtime Gamecock family. During the Fulmer years, he had the Vols beat for the Nashville Tennessean. He lived in Knoxville during those years. I consider him pretty much down the middle, however. I know he's a good guy.

Yeah, you won't come across many scholarship football players were signed to play college ball with only 3 games of playing experience in England.

Yep, he was born in Missouri, raised in SC, and now lives in TN. I seem to recall/read that when he was growing up in SC, he was as much of a TN Vol fan as anything, or became one late in his youth/early adulthood during the Johnny Majors/Phil Fulmer days.....

I thought he was a good reporter. His son began following in his footsteps on one of the big sports sites, I think 247. I believe he changed course and was teaching/coaching at the high school level last I heard.
