Why no universal basketball?

There is a universal basketball. It's the EVO ball. Same every year in the tournament. The NCAA is consistent.

The problem is that UK and other schools play with a different balls. They'd rather make a little more money than be better. Don't whine to NCAA, whine at them. Does everyone have to wear the same shoes? Do the courts have to be painted the same colors? All the same music?

If it matters, then Kentucky is the one that can make the change and let most everyone else be handicapped come March.

Not that this is necessarily related, but the topic reminded me of when I MUCH preferred the feel of genuine leather basketballs compared to the composite leather versions back in my playing days. I haven't kept up with the nuances of basketball construction these days. I just always hated when I was stuck with playing with a composite ball.

I always hated how slick Genuine leather became after a lot of use. Not a problem on game days but in open gym with balls that are years old.

Curious mind. How many years do a college basketball last before they change it out for a new one??? New ones to start each year? Are the ones used at the start of the NCAA Tournament Brand New Balls??

The NCAA Tournament gets new basketballs for the start of weekend (1st/2nd Rounds, Sweet 16/Elite 8, Final Four).

I would imagine most schools get new basketballs every year as part of their basketball contract (sometimes conference wide, sometimes school-specific). They probably rotate the old ones to practice or open gym, and rotate the older ones out.

I think it would be interesting to play one game a year with a ball that was too large to fit in the basket.
Ha .... you'd have to make the basketballs the size of large beachballs for that to happen. The diameter of the rim is about twice that of the diameter of a basketball.
