Yeah he was such a nomad at the end of his career, I always forget there was a certain amount of time, he basically just did whatever the hell he wanted too on the court...

That's where I'm torn, there have certainly been some incredible big men the game has been blessed with, but I think Shaq in his prime was the most "dominate" ever, although it's just an opinion

usually i side with the older generation players would struggle against the new age guys however for as good as Shaq was Kareem and Wilt were more dominant than him and would be more dominant than him in any generation.

Re: Will the game ever see someone this dominate again?

Shaq in his prime is probably the most dominant big man to ever play the game. It's almost difficult to argue ofherwise. Dominant to me insinuates his ability to take over a game, change it, and create an impossible matchup for ANYONE he faced while being the aggressor to the opposition.

Put money on the line and let me have first pick in an NBA pickup game, and a healthy shaq in his best shape and prime is in consideration.

Hated him but respecred his ability. Most physically dominant player to date. Couldn't shoot outside 5 feet, but didn't have to.

A friend of mine shot me this link, as I was watching I just couldent believe how mobile he was for his size, I completely forgot because I was pretty much too young to remember the beginning of his career, my most vivid memories were in Miami after he had gained some pounds and lost some steps

loved watching him as a kid when he was at LSU with that other great pg who played in the NBA and saw in play in Orlando 4 times his first 2 seasons. He is the best big man of all time . Well really pound for pound IMO it was Akeem the Dream who invented moves inside players are still trying to figure out but Shaq was the most dominant.

^^ that's true. Man I miss those days. The fact that I'm a year from 30 is so disturbing to me.

AD will definitely dominate the game but Shaq had an unmatched combination of size and athleticism like I have yet to see again.

I was born and raised in Bethlehem, between Taylorsville and Hickory btw.

He's probably the most ungaurdable player to play. Also, his passing skills were extremely efficient

My God the center position is so deep as far as GOAT and even making a top 5 list is hard. You have Kareem, Wilt, Russell, Shaq, Hakeem the Dream, Robinson, Ewing, and I have no doubt missed some that DEFINITELY should have been mentioned.

In my opinion, Wilt Chamberlain was the best big man of all time.

Yep. Shaq was great, no question, but Wilt the Stilt was on another level even than him.

If Kobe wasn't such a drama queen and would have embraced Shaq, no telling how many titles they would have won together.

Re: Will the game ever see someone this dominate again?

I'm 40. I'm not positive that Wilt was more dominant but it's a fair discussion.

I was talking to a guy who played center in the NBA for years. He left the league just before Shaq showed up.

He told me that the 3 strongest guys he ever played against were Daryl Dawkins, Artis Gilmore, and Wilt Chamberlain.

Here's the thing, though. He played against Chamberlain as a high school student in a pickup game at UCLA. Wilt was something like 44 at the time, and apparently was still an unstoppable physical beast.

So what was he like at 25? Like I said, it's a fair discussion.

Wilt vs Russell nothing ever like it again. Two of the greatest big men ever who played against each other for years and years. Hard for me to see anybody better than those two. Wilt score a 100 points in a game one time, averaged 50 for a season, Russell the consummate defensive player has eleven Rings.

I'd venture a yes. The population grows, and it seems like professional athlete's and in general continue to push to envelope of what's physically possible by human beings. A lot of young people have more opportunities to get excellent training and coaching early in their development along with much greater awareness of the importance of diet. We also intertwine in more ways than ever giving men and women more opportunities to meet a mate, and end up producing children who are athletically blessed. I see it right here in rock climbing where people continue to climb things thought to be unclimbable as recently as 5 years ago.

Re: Will the game ever see someone this dominate again?

To the OP- yes. What was Shaq's main skill? Honestly, it was no skill at all. It was that he was a truly gigantic human being with freakish athletic ability, ability that would have been good if he was a foot shorter, but was absolutely off the charts for a guy his size.

That means that someone else like him will come along. We're talking genetic lottery here, and though Shaq may have won that to an unprecedented extent, it's highly likely that someone else matches him at some point in the future.
