So you can actually replace coaches in college and improve. I read on here for so long that people couldn't be replaced that I almost started to believe it.
That's a joke son. When somebody isn't doing their job they need to be replaced. Hand wringing about who will we get that is better is a real beta trait.
I think that people are just generally worried about going from what you know to what you don't know.
Cal wasn't getting the job done. He had to go. But I think the hesitation with most is you knew what you were getting with him. You knew at the very least that he was going to bring in top classes after top classes and regardless of his coaching that should in most years at least put you in the conversation for contending.
Pope just didn't have that track record.
I think college basketball coaches boils down to two things for me.......1) can you coach and 2) can you recruit well enough to compete year in year out and do those recruits more importantly fit into your system. Because I feel at times Cal just went with top recruits without any regards to how they fit into the system and I feel that was a big issue at times with him.
With Pope, I'll say the man can definitely coach. Watched that UK video The Journey against Duke. He called it with Flagg at the end. He knew exactly what was going to happen and he told the team and they executed. From year 1, it also seems like he's been able to get players that fit into his system.
Whether he can recruit on a high enough level consistently remains to be seen, but it's definitely been a great start to this Pope era.
