Worst Refs Ever!!!

Refs were bad, but the Cats screwed themselves by not showing up for the first half. When you dig yourself into an 18- or 20-point hole, everything has to go right to come back, and obviously everything didn't.

As much as I agree that they've been bad Collins should know better.
I disagree. The refs were brutal in the first 20 minutes but Collins worked them just hard enough to make the refs finally call a good second half until that ridiculous no call. Collins' actions were warrented and mandatory.

They were nervous, and came back with enough vigor to win, we were robbed

Yeah I can't really blame Collins for getting that T. It was the second goal tend they'd gotten away with and the refs were pretending neither happened.

Doesn't it often happen (at all levels) that when a ref misses a call he folllows with a technical on the complaining coach. Doesn't happen as much when the ref knows he made the correct call.

Spot on.

Since it wasn't the first goal tending they missed, I can see how it drove Collins nuts (the refs did this to NU two years ago against Ohio State as well).

The continuations were garbage as well. Completely one sided. We lost at least two of those and Gonzaga had two go their way.

It was incredible how inconsistent the refs were. One possession it could be a total free for all (NU literally tackled Karnowski on a rebound; Law had a Zag taking him for a piggy back ride) the next it was ticky-tac (Lindsey's 2nd "foul" comes to mind).

Just awful.

Couldn't disagree more. Why give Gonzaga two free throws and an extra possession when you're only down 2 buckets? What if Gonzaga goes down the floor and turns the ball over or misses?
Even if they missed the zebras would have found a way to give them 2 o more points.

We, we helped to rob ourselves by constantly turning the ball over and going about 1-11 in 3s for the first half.
If we had had a normal first half just shooting 3P (which also would have helped other aspects, but forget that), instead of 1/11 would have been at least 4/11...nine more points just like that (and 4/11 isn't that good, just OK). And the margin of victory was...?
That said, it was the refs job to call a fair game. They didn't. And their bad officiating should have been worth at least 7 pts. Hence they DID rob us, in the end.

I seriously didn't think the refs were biased. Just terribly incompetent. The non-call on the goaltending hand-thru-the-hoop block was simply inexcusable. It was a 4 point swing, instead of being down three we ended up being down seven. I don't blame Collins for losing it. He clearly saw it and couldn't believe it wasn't called.

The worst part was that the guy grabbed the inside of the rim on the way down and shook the entire apparatus! How could they miss that?

These guys suck and should be investigated for calling such a one sided game. I hope they are fined, docked the privilege to ref again in this tournament.

They must have had money on the game. After gonzo went up by 20 then the refs called a fair game. All the money was on northwestern so its conceivable that the refs wanted creighton. But then we came back and the refs were forced to make blatant horrific calls. We got robbed.

After the Big Dance is done, I intend to look at all 67 box scores and see if anyone besides Gonzaga got 23 more free throw attempts in a game than their opponent

Particularly a team known for pretty damn good defense....

On reflection, I was wrong when I said earlier that the worst part was the guy grabbing the rim from the inside. That was bad and obvious and physically impossible to do if his hand was outside the rim.

The worst part though, was the emotional deflation. These kids were riding high. They had Gonzaga on the ropes. They'd done this before. They'd pulled games out at the end when it mattered. Heck, they had worked a miracle at UM!! They were psyched and emotional and on a roll.

But the refs killed all of that with their incompetence. That was the unfortunate damn shame of it all.

I'll bet that if there was a Vegas running line immediately prior to that goaltend and T, Vegas money would have been on us winning that game. Not a sure thing. But a strong probability. 2-1 in favor. Something like that. Maybe more. Gonzaga was cratering. We could all see it.

Immediately after, however, Vegas money would have taken it off the board because they know there's just no way to emotionally come back from that. That's how big that call was.

Seemed like NU couldn't LOOK at Zag and not get a foul when playing D. Seemed like they got an extra shot on EVERY shot in the paint. That's a stunning stat and suggests bias.

The call on Benson was correct - his elbow was extended and high. A lot of other calls, though...

But it wasn't an intentional hit! If extended high elbows are a flagrant, Larry Bird should have gotten a flagrant every time he shot a 3. It takes intent. There was no intent.
