We've got a thread for great debut albums, so what about a thread for musicians who followed up a great debut with a steaming pile of crap?

Offhand, both Weezer and Elastica fit this bill.

Spin Doctors. First album had decent songs. Second album was embarrassingly bad. I don’t know if they even made a third one or not.

U2 - October

admitted by band that it sucked because the lyrics book was stolen before studio deadline. Had to go to press with a box of rocks.

Pinkerton turned into a classic. Not as good as Blue, sure, and a financial disappointment, but a great album and easily their second-best by miles.
I disagree about it being their 2nd best by miles. All their albums are pretty good. They are underappreciated and overly criticized. Red album is the 2nd best also.

Worst 2nd album is tough because most of these bands didn't stay around long enough to be known. Off the top of my head maybe Boston?

The Knack- The Little Girls Understand... although anything they released was bound to be disappointing given the #1 Get the Knack.

If I understand the meaning of this thread then it's the worst 2nd album not a 2nd album that isn't as good as the first. Boston's 2nd album, while not as good as their 1st IMO was quite successful. Number 1 on the charts and 7x platinum.

One that really stands out to me is "Neither Fish nor Flesh" the second release from Terrance Trent D'arby.
TTD seemed to be on his way to pop superstardom with 1987's Intoducing the Hardline but that second album pretty much put a screeching halt to his career.

It was actually the third album, but Motley Crue's Theater of Pain follow up to Shout at the Devil was a train wreck. I'd include this just because Shout at the Devil was the one that really hit mainstream. I thought their debut Too Fast for Love was completely badass though.

Tha Doggfather, in hindsight, was probably Snoop's 2nd or 3rd best album (unfortunately), but off the heels of Doggystyle I couldn't have been more diappointed.

He completely abandoned the Gfunk sound, and never returned to it.

Theater has an iconic ballad, a hit cover, and one or two more good songs. I've always excused it because that's when Vince was on trial for vehicular homicide.

And everyone else was out of their minds on coke and heroin.

The Black Crows & Skid Row come to mind. Both had massive debut albums and both of their follow up albums sucked

Southern Harmony was a very solid album. Remedy, Sting Me and Hotel Illness are good songs. Rest of the songs are pretty good, also. Didn't come close to being as popular as Shake Your Money Maker but I think it's a huge exaggeration to say it sucked.

Agree. "Thorn in my Pride" was also one of their best.
