Which brings up a good question. Why didn't Venables do at OU what he is doing now? Getting better recruits? Has he simplified his defense? Does he have better defensive coaches? What the hell is it?
I think he is able to get better recruits (STUDS) at Clemson and they are developing that talent much better than when he was at OU.

Agree.
And I think getting away from Mike Stoops was a plus for him as well.
It appears that Sweeney has given Venables his own autonomy in building and maintaining a defense. He's not coaching in someone else's shadow at Clemson.

You know the answer to that, 67...Experience = PROGRESS! And Excellence Attracts Excellence...In Clemson's Case...Strong D, Just as OUr Strong O Attracts the Cream of the Crop to QB/RB U!

Venables has depth on the defensive line that he didn't have at Oklahoma. We usually had one to three guys who were NFL prospect defensive lineman, at best. He has multiple DTs and DEs that are just that good. It starts upfront and Clemson had arguably one of the greatest defensive fronts in college football history.

I thought Lawrence would be Alabama's key to victory, but he was incredible. I've been high on him all year but just didn't think he'd be ready to make the plays against the Tide. I was dead wrong.

I had the opportunity to watch party the Natty last night with some very knowledgeable football guys. A guy (Sooner) & K-State (ex-player from 2000) told me that Grinch was contacted the week after Mike was fired. Grinch accepted the OU job even knowing Shiano was going to be fired after the bowl game. They also said Riley will have difficulty keeping Rattle from the top of the QB mix next year. They said he is not as scrappy as Baker but smarter with the ball and will make his reads/progressions much better after some experience. Not as fast and quick Kyler but will be stronger and elusive. They believe Kendall will transfer and Mordecai will back up Rattle by mid October. Consensus was that OU has the #1 recruiting class at present.

I thought Venables himself admitted to complacency at Oklahoma. Am I remembering that incorrectly? The OU coaches had gotten soft in their recruiting effort.

One more reason, in addition to the many already espoused here, his hands were tied by Bob IMO.
Bob wanted bend but don't break and didn't allow Brent to run "his" defense.
Pretty simple, really.
From what we are reading, I think we have the BV attitude coming to Norman.

I love Riley's personality and his egoless approach to the game and his role in it. He wants to win and EVERYONE gets the credit from him.

I think, and yes I am hoping, we are getting ready to see the kind of success at Oklahoma that we have seen from Alabama the last decade. These two can pave the way to make the OUr team dominant for decades to come!

Dabo was just a bit older than Riley when he took over the head coaching role at Clemson. It took him about 4 years to get his feet under him, and then he started rolling and created his own Alabama type dynasty.

OU was in better shape than Clemson at that time. Our recruiting is already starting to roll. Last year's class was superb. This year's is likely to be superb. We could be looking at the kickoff of a dynasty next year or 2020 if Riley doesn't step backwards, and that might coincide with the departure of Saban from the college game. Maybe we'll see a yearly Clemson - OU rivalry in the near future.

We have not had good luck against Clemson and I don't think this year would have been any different. I can't see us being able to run the ball and I'm pretty sure their dline would have had a lot of pressure on Murray.

They are stout to say the least. They lose a bunch of legit stars for this upcoming season. Time will tell the impacts. Just like our situation.

Better talent especially on the dline. Bob gotten lazy with recruiting when Brent was there. Our last great dline man was McCoy and we went to a title game. Jordan Philips was okay but he’s no McCoy. The games are won in the trenches. We get stellar offensive lineman but we haven’t seemed to get the big time dline under Stoops. With Lincoln it’s changing for the better though.

Yea Clemson would’ve killed us all game... where bamas line was in spurts and hardly getting to Kyler in the 2nd half

Venables to K-State would be 10 steps back for him. He has the ideal job and will out recruit any of the ACC *** hats. He is a great mind and he has tempered his game flip outs. His next stop may be NFL.

Well if he is next up at Clemson then yea it’s a step back. I can see him going to South Carolina too or even USC in a few years.

Sooner DLs in the NFL
We essentially have 1 DL starter in the NFL. Not even a reserve since 2014.

Geneo Grissom 2014 (0 starts in 4 years)
Gerald McCoy 2009
Stacy McGee 2012 (29 total starts in 6 years)
Jordan Phillips 2014 (26 total starts in 5 years)

Yup, we need to go after 4 and 5 star dlinemen
