Wrestler development and needed change

Probably my biggest concern, and this goes back 15 years, is that Iowa never seems to peak at the end of the season. Even in years they won a title, they didn’t wrestle as well as many (rational) fans may have expected given who we had. They were just ahead of the field far enough to win anyway.

It seems as though coaches simply say, “Go harder…harder….harder” all season. What it feels like we should do is evolve so we can go harder and smarter. We’re beating our head against a wall when we need to stop and realize there is a better way.

We’re not developing wrestlers as well as other programs. We’re losing ground, and headed for a 6th or 7th place finish this year. I don’t see that changing until there are fundamental changes in the program. But don’t make a small change, go big. Small adjustments in the coaching staff will do absolutely nothing. Your first call is David Taylor. Tell him to build what he’s planning to build, but let’s do it together in the Big Ten. Then, throw whatever it takes at him to get him. That is the change that needs to be made. If that is the change that is made, donors will be maintained, and possibly grow because that says we mean business. Go get Kemerer and Nolf and anyone else Taylor wants as assistants.

David Taylor has a multi-million dollar contract at the most historic college wrestling program in the world. It's literally a dream job and he is already having success and has a pipeline of elite recruits coming in. He also has the support of billionaire donors and a relevant RTC program (Iowa is sorely lacking this). You would probably have to offer him 5x the money of what he's currently getting for him to even consider leaving. Getting Taylor is as realistic as getting Cael. Might as well dream big, huh?

Best to focus on coaching candidates who are actually available (i.e. not currently a head coach of a top tier program and having tons of success).

I’m aware of what he has.

How bad do you want to get back to the top?

We are allowed to develop wrestlers? I thought they had to get worse the longer they are here.

So David Taylor can only achieve that level of success (outside of Penn State) at Oklahoma State? That’s simply not true.

Nobody is saying this. He could achieve similar success IF Iowa had a relevant RTC, which it currently does not. The bigger problem is you would literally have to win a bidding war against Ok State.
