So curious, since it was recorded multiple times. Who is attributed to the original of I Heard it Through The Grapevine. I know Marvin didn’t record it first but I can’t remember if Gladys Knight was first or Smokey?

WXPN is a ******* treasure

anyway. Way cool thing top 850 cover songs

number two a great choice. hurt by Johnny Cash simply a sublimely fantastic cover

and thank you lord the greatest cover ever was number one

guess it. Obvious and correct.
I love Hurt by Johnny Cash, but I think it's a bit overrated overall. Glen Campbell's "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" is much more real and sadder.

My favorite cover w/out looking at the list? Probably Manfred Mann's Blinded by the Light - just because I didn't have to hear Bruce sing it.

+100 on Blinded By The Light. It’s #28. Manfred Mann turned it from a forced Dylanesque song by Springsteen (e.g. overly-complex, nonsensical lyrics without Dylan’s originality) into an unforgettable classic. Both the instrumental break and outro will live on forever.

My favorite one time video cover is The Knack playing Hard Days Night live - just sticking their fingers in the media's eye and killing the song. Really killing it.

When the writer(s) aren’t the first to record, is theirs considered a cover?

Rolling Stones: As Tears Go By (Marianne Faithful)

I’m biased, era-wise. Here are some I like off the top of my bald head.

Elvis: What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace Love and Understanding

The Clash: Police and Thieves; I Fought The Law

Devo: Satisfaction

GNR: Knocking on Heaven’s Door

Sundays: Wild Horses

10,000 Maniacs: Because the Night

Ramones: Needles and Pins

Billy Idol: Mony Mony

Run DMC: Walk This Way

Naked Eyes: Always Something There to Remind Me

If memory serves me correct Manfred mann lyrics don't match Bruce's ... Bruce was reciting the lyrics from pay phone in an airport I believe the story goes and had a bad connection so Manfred basically guessed at the lyrics turned it into an amazing song

Campbell’s cover of Ghost on the Canvas (Paul Westerberg song) is excellent.

Was “Warning” the cover of an Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation song done by Black Sabbath on the list?

In my opinion, blinded by the light is one of the worst ******* songs I’ve ever heard no matter who plays it

The media LOATHED the Knack, but I challenge anyone without an agenda to listen to their debut album and not like at least half of it. Your Number or Your Name, Frustrated, That’s What the Little Girls Do, etc. Power Pop at its best

Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires covered Warren Zevon's Mutineer on one of the last shows. It was amazing.

On the Warren Zevon tribute concert after his death, Bruce Springsteen did great version of My Ride's Here.

Clearly I am a Warren Zevon fan, but I realize his music isn't for everyone.

Did these make the list?

This song was actually written by Richard Marx.

Keep Me in Your Heart has the capability of dropping me dead in my tracks and dropping me in a puddle of tears. Great song. Great songwriter.

Amen! The Knack's debut album "Get The Knack" absolutely kicked ***. I haven't listened to it for awhile now so I'm glad I saw this thread to give me a reminder to listen to it again.

Two of my favorite cover songs are by Elton John. The Who is my favorite band of all time but I love Elton’s version of Pinball Wizard.

Yes it is. I love when they do these countdowns. Every Friday when they do free at noon I wish I was there. Always discovering new music listening. Discovered the Budos Band last week.

Didn't realize Quiet Riot's *** on Feel the Noize was a cover and had to look it up. There was a band called Slade that created it in 1974. Good stuff on WXPN and stream it all the time.

Here is a link to their page of 885 Greatest Cover Songs(as voted on by listeners) - being a data nerd I am geeking out on their filters and what not. The most covered song voted on: This must be the place by the Talking Heads

https://xpn.org/885-countdown/

Currently, they are playing covers voted for but didn't make it into the 885.

Well, from the list, SRV's version ofHendrix's LIttle Wing is stunning.

The ATari's version of Boys of Summer is pretty good.

Not on the list - Cody Parks and The Dirty South's version of Folsom Prison Blues.
