Will ever be a good enough in game coach to do something like Kirby did last night ? He doesn’t call that timeout the game would probably have been lost. Stoops can’t even do it when we got 9 defenders much less because he recognizes a mismatch. That was one of the plays of the game. And got it by a millisecond.

There's a risk to that too. Coaches have called timeout and the guy missed only to make it the next time. It's a risk that worked out for Kirby.
No we wouldn't have. Of course we would have been down 38 to 7 at that point instead of 38 to 27 so it's a moot comparison IMO

They tried a fake punt and Kentucky’s team was disciplined enough to pay attention at the line, make the tackle and completely swing momentum to our side.
Do you think Kirby smart will ever have a disciplined enough team to make a play without a time out?
I said as much in a few different threads last night. Stoops is poor at managing timeouts/clock management. It’s one reason why I don’t think he will ever be elite.

It’s more about if stoops has the ability to make a decision like that. And to blind homer defend it without being able to discuss it is pure homerism. We couldn’t even get play calls in during a number of big moments this year so stop acting like it’s not valid. He has positives and negatives. Just like I gave him props for his portal success But you can’t say one thing in fault of stoops. Quick decisive decisions and also clock management are not his strong suit. Or his average suit.

It felt intentional to me that he called the TO early enough that he didn't get a practice kick off.
It’s not blind homerism though, it’s proof in a similar play that Kentucky defended successfully, Georgia did not successfully defend this play and without a time out would have lost a game. Kentucky calls a time out, penn state punts then who knows how it goes.

There is a Georgia fan here that usually points out that stoops and Kirby are very similar coaches, difference is a 5 star at every position to what we have.

If the guy in the booth radioed down like the UGA guy evidently did, Stoops probably calls the time out.
Nothing in his 10+ years as a HC says yes. In my opinion, it's actually a resounding no.
Do you think our staff or stoops is going to catch that trick play when they couldn't catch us having 9 men on the field and leaving a wide receiver uncovered?
We most likely wouldn't have caught the mismatch because our ST's have been woeful most of Stoops tenure. The only years we were good on ST's was when Dean Hood was here. Hopefully Boulware knows what he's doing because we need a serious upgrade there.
If you read Coach Smarts comments after the game he didn’t want to call the timeout. He thought it was more important to have all 3 timeouts available for later if needed.

That’s the exact point. Didn’t want to. But did anyways because at end of day having the timeouts doesn’t matter if they convert there. Stoops wouldn’t have. Hell, he couldn’t even decide the right decision on declining or accepting penalties while they’re in field goal range.
Offensive philosophy is what will keep him from being elite and l'm not just talking passing . It's scoring and I don't care how you get it. Everybody keeps talking Coen this. Coen that. Why was Coen good? Wandale Robinson!!!
Several of us were at the game Sat. We were down 21-0 with 10 minutes in the 3rd. Time for a little urgency, right? We started watching clock management. Well, with or without the game clock running, we never snapped the ball with more than 8 seconds left on play clock the rest of the game!. That's wasting 30+ seconds of time on each snap down 21-0!!! Ridiculous .

I've often wondered how effective the "freeze" actually is. In fact I read somewhere a few years ago that someone tracked kicker success with the freeze vs. without and the percentage of success was virtually the same.
I think when the TO is called but the kicker kicks the ball anyway it gives him a "practice" kick which can be helpful. I've heard some kickers comment when asked about the freeze say they actually like the extra time to prep for the kick.

Early in his tenure, Stoops had some issues on game organization. Now not so much

My point is that if making elite level calls like the TO in question is a measure that you use to determine if someone should/should not coach at UK, you'll be disappointed 99.999999% of the time. "If" we are lucky enough to ever have such a coach, he'd leave in a yr or 2 for the Bamas/OSU's of the world.
The only time I know is when the kicker gets the first kick off, despite the freeze. If he makes the first and misses the second, I call the coach a genius. If he misses the first and makes the second, I call the coach a dumbass.
You all are forgetting one of the iconic moments of Stoops’ tenure, when he was the only person in a whole stadium that knew what was going on.
After Josh Allen stripped the QB at Florida in 2018, the crowd became so quiet you can actually hear Stoops’ voice on the network TV coverage, alone on the UK sideline, shouting for Robinson to return the fumble to the end zone . . . which he eventually (barely) did.
He was the only one fully tuned into the situation.,
Leaving a WR wide open? Misusing Time outs? When did that happen this year? Special teams and offensive production I get. Fixable. The other stuff, game day mismanagement is few and far between because Stoops has learned on the job his first few years.

100% on this one but I do believe Stoops knew we didn't have the personnel or mindset (both his fault) to come back from 3 TDs on that defense without CRod and Levis. The sad things is - I guarantee you he would have pulled the same plow horse move regardless of personnel. Guy can't take chances that could put his beloved defense in a bind. Gotta protect those defensive stats.
He's very Hal Mumme like in his lack of focus on one side of the ball. He's done a lot of things better than Hal but the guy can't get out of his way thinking defense first, second, and third.
That is what separates the average from the good/great. The good/great surround themselves with people who compliment their weaknesses and listen to them. The average surround themselves with people who think like they think and live in an echo chamber.
What are those examples? It would probably be better to discuss those examples than a hypothetical situation to which there is no answer.
No one is mentioning OSU had 12 players lined up for the snap, which pulled a defender away. So officials should have thrown a flag if Kirby had not called timeout.
So, in fact, the very play that proves Kirby’s genius is one, in fact, where he saved his opponent’s *** by calling timeout?
