Correct. Those empties were the student section seats. Just a late-arriving crowd due to the early start for the "Blue Out". Kids were still tailgating. They filled in nicely by the 8th inning.
Nothing is more silly than posts complaining about "official attendance" being "wrong" when everyone knowns that practically every sports team uses tickets sold as the metric not actual turnstile count. It is what it is. It is not teams lying or trying to deceive.
Ironically, the Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles sold more tix than sPitt does. I bet a lot of people came to see Luther’s defense though.

It is deceptive because attendance is not the same thing as tickets sold. You’re not wrong that all teams do this, but attendance implies ‘people there to watch the game.’ Tickets sold means tickets sold.

100% agree. That why I wish there was a salary cap in baseball. It would even out the chances for small market teams to compete.
