If he does manage to pull off the upset against Iowa, that tells me that it was, in fact, coaching (or lack thereof) that was the problem.
Iowa might be winnable. They've only lost to Indiana and Iowa State, but the rest of their schedule hasn't been that tough.

I guess saying it doesn't mean much...if he gets them to play better I'll be impressed. Not expecting it nor blaming him if it doesn't happen but giving him full credit if it does.

After watching Northwestern run right up the middle all day long, I certainly appreciate the comment.
It will be interesting to see how Knowles is going to gel with the new structure that is put in place. I do not know the working relationship that existed between Knowles and Smith with regards to the Defense, but as cornerbacks coach, I assume he took direction from Knowles. Now he is his Knowles' boss and can make certain demands.
A little history about Knowles from his time here at OSU. He was well-respected for his knowledge and acumen, but he was never a people person. He also rubbed some assistants the wrong way and it came to a head after the Oregon game. After the loss, Knowles got into it with D-Line coach Larry Johnson. Day had to finally step in and he demanded changes to the defense. It is believed that this is when the relationship began to fracture. Knowles philosophy has always been 'my way or the highway' and I have to believe when he came to PSU, he had an agreement with Franklin that he gets to run the Defense the way he sees fit. Knowles doesn't like interference.

I was losing my mind during the UCLA game watching the UCLA QB run through the wide open gap left by #33 rushing straight up the field time after time after time.
