I haven't finished Whoami, and I've yet to install the DVD drive on my Linux machine so that I can properly watch Mr Robot. Any other somewhat accurate haCk0r2 movies or series out there? I'm hoping that something new comes out.
Whoami is a great film; all in German though so if people want to check it out heads up. It has good subtitles though so you aren't lost. Pretty accurate in terms of social engineering (which is a great deal of hacking now, not all, but a lot.)
Mr. Robot is the best media for real world hacking and social engineering. It gets.....very weird towards the end though, be forewarned.
It also stole a cryptography puzzle from a well known infosec dude for one of its ARGs and did not give him credit, but, it's still a very very good series.
The problem is that real world hacking is 95% boring work and 5% "Oh yes, now I control the system." And it's exhilarating when you get to that 5%. But it's a lot of work before hand and isn't always exciting for the big/small screen. Hollywood has oversimplified the art to a bunch of random keyboard clicks and an "I'm in". It's a lot of hard work and it's just not fun for most people to see the ground work.
As far as good movies, they are sadly few and far between.
But, "Black Hat" is good, if a little bit cheesy at times.
