I just don’t believe that resonates with the majority of these guys, they mostly have one goal in mind, NIL, partying-chilling-hanging out, then bolting for the next payday, likely another school or overseas, whoever is the highest bidder.

These guys don’t care about all that stuff. College sports are very different now. It’s about the money just like professional sports. It’s carrying over to wins and losses now. More losses than anything for this team.

Here’s the thing about the money though that doesn’t get talked about. Money is a big part of choosing between employment opportunities. Not the only reason for sure, but initially if other things are equal it’s often a determinative factor and also kind of a way one might judge how much he/she is wanted or valued by that employer, right?

But in my experience, once the deal is made the money doesn’t factor in to the performance for people that are really good at what they do. It’s a pride thing, an ego thing, even obsessive-compulsive. I believe that applies to basketball players – even young ones – just the same. Once the deal is made the best ones are going to perform the same whether they’re getting paid or not and regardless of the amount. The drive to succeed, be the best and often the fear of failure compels them. In this environment it’s even more important for a coach to be able to identify those type of guys.

I agree. The difference is most of the college athletes don’t have the level of maturity needed to perform and follow through.

These kids don’t care about the jersey anymore. We have to stop with that antiquated viewpoint or Kentucky basketball is going to get left behind. It’s about money now. Kentucky can either get with that reality or become Indiana

Presuming this were true, money is still likely to alter a player’s priorities and objectives on the court.

A player whose primary motivator is money …rather than team success …is logically gonna be focused on trying to pad his personal stats more than doing the little things that help teams win. Because better individual stats equals a bigger NIL paycheck the next season.

There’s a saying: “It’s amazing what teams can accomplish when individuals stop worrying about who gets the credit.” Well, those incentivized only by money are programmed to never stop focusing on personal credit.

He spoke truth. Players come for the coaches and NIL. Not the "jersey". The jersey, sounds good for fans. Reality is very different. Ask Mike Woodson and Kenny Payne.
Not entirely true. I'm sure Moreno and Jasper had big money offers at other places or would have if they wanted to, but they wanted to play for Kentucky. This is only going to be true with kids that grew up where college basketball is important.
