Bryce Young’s arm is what has separated him as an elite talent in college football. However, his talent in the pocket has overshadowed his mobility. If anyone thought that part of his game was underrated, he made sure to put it on full display in No. 1 Alabama’s 55-0 win in their opener against Utah State.

With 100 rushing yards and a touchdown, Young had by far the best rushing game of his career. He spoke after the game about how it just worked out that way because of what the Aggies gave him.

“I just try to do whatever is best for the team with whatever the defense gives me. But, yeah, that’s definitely interesting. I don’t know,” said Young. “That definitely wasn’t something I was planning but, for me, it’s just taking what the defense gives me. That’s definitely a big theme for us offensively.”

Young had never rushed for more than 42 yards in his career. That means his 2022 debut more than doubled his previous best performance with his legs. While Young’s ability to throw the football is still his greatest talent, this newfound capability to run adds yet another layer to his game. However, Young says it just depends on what each opponent puts in front of him each week.

“Today that was just what was available. It’s cool but, again, I’m just trying to do whatever I can to move the ball and to do what’s best for the offense. That’s just what happened to be what it was tonight,” Young said.

If Bryce Young can continue to show this latest skill, he becomes that much more dangerous as a weapon. His size makes it safer for him to stay behind the line, but it’s good to see he’s added it to his game. We’ll have to wait and see what Texas’ defense throws at him before we know if we’ll see more of the same from Young next week.
