This week, Alabama plays ULM. It’s a game that most people look at as a cupcake, an easy win. But, Nick Saban and Alabama know that this game is different. In 2007, Saban’s first season, he lost at home to ULM. Now, Saban is going to lean on key players like DeMarcco Hellams to help prevent that from happening again.

During a press conference, DeMarcco Hellams was asked what he was doing in 2007 when Alabama lost to ULM.

“In 2007, I was doing the same thing I’m doing now,” DeMarcco Hellams said. “You know, playing football.”

“I don’t remember that game, but you know, in football, if you don’t come ready any team can get you, especially playing Alabama. You know, we get everyone’s best game. So, you know we’re definitely preparing for ULM the same as we do any other opponent.”

Week 2 saw several major upsets. Notre Dame lost at home to Marshall. Texas A&M lost to Appalachian State. Even Alabama nearly fell to a Texas team whose starting quarterback went down early in the game.

“It just showed that you can’t be complacent,” DeMarcco Hellams said of those upsets. “You know, we have to take all our opponents seriously. You know, we have to prepare for every opponent the same way. So, you know, we’re just preparing this week to make sure that we’re not one of those teams.”

DeMarcco Hellams was a consensus four-star recruit in the Class of 2019. Now a senior, Hellams has been a key member of the defense over the past couple of seasons, intercepting three passes during the 2021 season.
