Kadyn Proctor is heading back to Alabama as he committed to the Crimson Tide out of the NCAA transfer portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett. The former Iowa offensive tackle was just with the Hawkeyes for only a few months.

He started his career at Alabama before electing to go back closer to home at Iowa. But, he ultimately decided to re-enter the portal and head back to Tuscaloosa under new coach Kalen DeBoer.

In the days since Proctor’s decision to re-enter the portal back in March and head back to Tuscaloosa was made public, speculation ran rampant that the offensive tackle took NIL dollars from the collective at Iowa known as Swarm Collective, all just to leave after less than 60 days.

In its statement, the collective made clear any dollars paid out to the former Five-Star Plus+ recruit did not come from donors’ pockets.

“Swarm operates with both the nonprofit collective side, which relies on generous fan contributions, and the Inc. side, where businesses contract with student-athletes,” the statement from Swarm CEO Brad Heinrichs said, via On3’s Pete Nakos. “Kaydn Proctor has not received funds from the collective. He received a portion of his Swarm Inc. contracted payment from a sponsoring business. We are unable to share the details of these contracts due to confidentiality clauses in the contracts. Supporting lowa athletics and lowa nonprofits remains our priority. Thank you for your support.”

Proctor initially committed to the Hawkeyes as a high school recruit before flipping to Alabama a day before signing day in December 2022. He started 13 games at left tackle as a true freshman, earning All-SEC Freshman Team honors. Proctor picked up SEC Freshman of the Week recognition for his play at Auburn and was named to On3’s Freshmen All-American team.

As a member of the Class of 2023, Proctor was a five-star recruit out of Des Moines (Iowa) Southeast Polk, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
