No coach ever expects to go through what Alabama head coach Nate Oats is currently dealing with. Over the weekend, Alabama forward Darius Miles was charged with capital murder.

Miles only played in six games during the 2022-23 season, missing time due to an injury and needing to step away due to personal reasons. While speaking to the media, Oats confirmed that Miles’ previous personal matter was unrelated to his arrest.

“He actually went back home to DC to deal with the personal matter that he was out a couple of weeks with,” Nate Oats said.

“And he had the ankle injury, it was kind of ongoing. I mean, he’s had multiple issues. They were all completely unrelated to this incident Saturday, though. Sorry, Sunday morning.”

Nate Oats made his first public comments since the arrest

On Monday, Nate Oats made his first public comments since Darius Miles was arrested. In those comments, he offered condolences to the family of Jamea Jonae Harris, who is the victim in this case. He also spoke about his own family, his own daughters, and how this could easily have been one of them.

“Condolences to the family and friends of Jamea Jonae Harris. Young woman, daughter and mother, who was taken way too soon from a senseless act. This is an incredibly sad situation and our hearts go out to her loved ones, keeping them in our thoughts and prayers as they continue to grieve. We came together last night and talked, thought it was important that we were all here and around to support one another through this situation,” Nate Oats said.

“I’ve got three daughters. It went through my mind how easily it could have been one of mine. Tough situation. Talked to Darius’ mother multiple times yesterday. Very hard situation on both accounts.”
