Paul Finebaum believes Nick Saban is not happy with Alabama's quarterback situation

Alabama has questions at the quarterback position, and SEC Network host Paul Finebaum believes Nick Saban doesn’t have a good answer at the moment.

When he joined McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning one day this week, the two radio hosts tested Finebaum’s telepathic abilities to read between the lines of Nick Saban’s press conferences, asking him to reveal what the Alabama head coach is really thinking about the quarterback position for the Tide.

The Tide are looking at an ongoing three-man race between returners Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson — the former of which played in lieu of Bryce Young when necessary in ’22 — while the team also added Notre Dame’s Tyler Buchner to the competition in the spring.

Despite the options, Paul Finebaum isn’t too high on the state of the QB room and said he believes that Nick Saban “may know the limitations and he’s already adjusted” at the position. While that’s a harsh truth to face, Finebaum says Saban won’t set unrealistic goals for his QB if the talent isn’t like it has been recently.

“Now, I know that sounds absurd to most people who think Nick Saban always expects 100%, and if he can’t get it, he’s going to kill himself. He’s an extremely smart evaluator of talent, maybe the best of all time. And he sees the limitation perhaps at quarterback, and he’s adjusting to it and he’s trying to figure out a way.”

Paul Finebaum went on to note that he thinks Saban is upset with aspects of the team, and if he were to journey inside the mind of the Crimson Tide head coach, he’d find out that it’s the QBs causing a lot of worry.

“I don’t think he wants to send off too many flares — but I mean, he’s clearly frustrated with certain things. If I had to get inside his brain, right now, which would be intriguing, I’m pretty sure he’s not happy about the quarterback situation.”

However, at the end of the day, Finebaum is for the most part speculating and admits that you never can tell for certain what a head coach is really thinking.

“But it’s so difficult to tell, because we sat here so many Augusts, where the best intel is ‘well, this is the best team we’ve ever seen’ and then something goes wrong quickly. So I feel like maybe we’re a dog chasing our tail here, but we are trying to gauge what he’s doing.”
